BACHELOR
OF SCIENCE
BIOLOGY
Mission Statement
The Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in Biology
is designed to prepare the graduate with the knowledge,
skills, and experiences to be able to compete and
succeed in graduate and professional schools. The
graduate will also be able to engage in careers that
require knowledge and skills in Biology related fields.
(Mission statements 1,5, and 6)
Goals
A graduate in this program will be prepared to pursue
graduate studies and to succeed in professional programs
in areas such as medicine, dentistry, veterinarian
science, and pharmacy.
Objectives
A graduate in this program will be able to:
- effectively compete in a variety of biological
career venues. The graduate will master the aspects
of “modern biology”, including genetics,
microbiology and cell physiology, without losing
sight of the more traditional subjects of natural
selection, taxonomy, ecology, anatomy, and biological
techniques.
- demonstrate specific laboratory and technical
skills essential in entering the job market and/or
pursuing graduate education in the biological sciences.
These essential skills include not only a demonstration
of the mastery of biological topics, but also include
such skills areas as microbiological techniques,
taxonomy, dissection, field collection, and the
ability to analyze scientific literature.
- identify and describe basic physiologic processes
including photosynthesis, respiration, osmoregulation,
mineral nutrition, water transport, translocation
of food and other metabolic substances, growth regulation
and reproduction.
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of metabolic
processes including energy transformations, metabolic
pathways, and the role of enzymes in chemical reactions
in organisms.
- Able to recognize and discuss levels of organization
in organisms and principles of homeostasis.
- describe natural cycles involving the elements
essential for life.
- demonstrate the ability to organize a research
project and defend the results, methods, and materials
of the project.
- provide written and oral evidence of his or her
competency in biology.
