Criminal Justice (CRJU) Course Descriptions
 
111 Introduction to Criminal Justice System 3 hours
The student will explore the challenges of crime and justice in American Society. Development of a significant understanding of the roles of the criminal justice actors (from law enforcement to corrections) is emphasized. Further analyses will reveal the interdependent relationships, controls placed on the criminal justice actors and societal influences upon the distribution of justice.
 
193 Courts and the Judicial Process 3 hours
Court functions in the United States as related to the Criminal Justice System at the local, state, and federal level. Emphasis will be placed on the criminal courts process. Prerequisite: CRJU 111.
 
215 Crime Scene Management 3 hours
This class is intended to introduce students to the basic procedures of crime scene investigation. Crime scenes will be processed, evidence collected, investigation reports written, and a mock trial will be held.
 
222 Police Practices and Procedures 3 hours
Police functions as performed in the United States including nature, responsibilities, traditional procedures; and interrelationship of various police divisions. Prerequisite: CRJU 111.
 
223 Corrections 3 hours
Corrections introduces the student to a major component of the criminal justice system. In this course the historical, legal and philosophical systemic nature of correctional intervention is realized. This is accomplished by focusing on the interdependent role of the judiciary, law enforcement and correctional agencies. Prerequisite: CRJU 111.
 
232 Criminal Evidence and Procedures 3 hours
The laws of criminal evidence and procedure are studied through the examination of the Bill of Rights, paying particular attention to the Fourth, Fifth, Sixth and Fourteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution. Emphasis is given to the rules governing the admissibility of evidence, as well as their exceptions. Furthermore, the student will study the Code of Criminal Procedure as it affects all of the criminal justice actors and the criminal court system from the trial court through the appellate courts including corrections. Prerequisite: CRJU 111.
 
293 Juvenile Justice System 3 hours
The social and historical philosophy of children in the legal system will be investigated. Focus is placed on the special legal status of the juvenile protective services, the juvenile and family court movement and the child’s relationship to the state. In addition, certain non-criminal situations, the origination of delinquency and precedent setting cases will be highlighted. Prerequisite: CRJU 111.
 
297 Internship 3 hours
Placement and actual "hands-on" experience in a criminal justice agency such as a police or sheriff's department or correctional facility. Prerequisite: Student must complete 21 hours of criminal justice courses.
 
310 Criminal Justice Management 3 hours
Principles of management and administration as practiced in public criminal justice organizations. Special emphasis on budgeting and personnel. Prerequisite: CRJU 111, CRJU 222, CRJU 223.
 
321 Criminal Law 3 hours
While studying Criminal Law the student will investigate the historical and philosophical rationales behind our laws in America. Predicated upon the Model Penal Code, the student will encounter various classification schema, identify the elements of specific crimes and encounter “real life” situations re-lived through court case briefs. Inquires into affirmative defenses are also generated in order to present a well rounded understanding of the criminal law in American society. Prerequisite: CRJU 111, CRJU 222, CRJU 223.
 
323 Comparative Criminal Justice Systems 3 hours
This course will enable the student to understand and analyze various criminal justice systems around the world. The emphasis will be on police, courts and corrections in various countries with an emphasis on Canada and the United Kingdom. Prerequisite: CRJU 111; CRJU 193.
 
401 Ethics in Criminal Justice 3 hours
Theories and practices in the areas of legality, morality, values and ethics in the criminal justice system. Prerequisite: CRJU 111; CRJU 193.
 
493 Seminar in Criminal Justice 3 hours
The Seminar is the “capstone” to the educational experiences in the fields of Criminal Justice. It serves the same purpose as a thesis for Masters students and a dissertation for doctoral students. It is a demonstration of the student’s ability to carry out, present and critically evaluate research. Prerequisites: Second semester junior or senior status and CRJU 111; CRJU 222; CRJU 223; CRJU 293.
 
497 Internship II 3 hours
Placement and actual “hands-on” experience in a criminal justice agency such as a police or sheriff’s department or correctional facility. Prerequisite: CRJU 111 and CRJU 222 or CRJU 223. Corequisite: Consent of advisor, permission of Internship Committee and 2.75 overall grade point average.
