History/Political Science

Mission Statement

The program in history and political science is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding and appreciation for the diversity of human experience, past and present, by focusing on the histories and political traditions of the United States and other parts of the world.

Goals

This program specifically aims to prepare students:

  • For graduate or professional study leading to careers in higher education, law, business, or related fields.
  • For employment in government, heritage tourism, nonprofit organizations, or other forms of community service.

Objectives

In order to accomplish the above goals, students must demonstrate:

  1. A comprehensive, critical understanding of historical facts, themes, and ideas as they relate to our world, past and present.
  2. A comprehensive, critical understanding of the political principles, values, and institutions of the United States and other societies, past and present.
  3. The knowledge and skills to solve problems that require evaluative judgments, critical thinking, ethical decisions and thoughtful responses.
  4. The ability to communicate effectively through discussion, debate, and writing.
  5. An appreciation for active, lifelong learning and citizenship.
