WV AHEC Interdisciplinary Team Rotation

Overview: The focus of the Northern WV Rural Health Education Center (AHEC) Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) Rotation is to provide a solid interdisciplinary training experience focusing on graduate primary care education. Although voluntary, an AHEC rotation fulfills all the requirements of a WVRHEP rotation, and may also be eligible for the SEARCH Program, which provides a stipend for work done on the rotation.

Each AHEC IDT rotation consists of a team of learners from a minimum of four disciplines and includes:

  • one or more primary care resident or osteopathic intern (a resident and/or intern is required in order for an AHEC IDT to take place) plus
  • one or more medical students (osteopathic or allopathic) and
  • at least two of the following: nursing or nurse practitioner student, dental student or first year dental resident, PharmD candidate, MPH student, dietetic student, social work student, PA student, physical therapy student, medical technology student and/or one allied health student.
  • Team driven and faculty facilitated, the IDT researches a community’s needs and selects a WV Healthy People 2010 Objective(s) they feel addresses one or more of those needs. As a team, they develop a public health intervention that is service based, prevention-oriented, and community-focused that will impact the WV Healthy People 2010 Objective they have selected. Once implemented, the IDT’s intervention is made available for subsequent teams to build upon, use as a reference, or generate new programming if desired.

    In addition, each participant selects personal competency goals from the Pew Health Professions Commission, "Twenty-one Competencies for the Twenty-first Century." Throughout the rotation, IDT members work to improve their chosen competencies.

    The AHEC interdisciplinary team approach emphasizes:

  • defining the roles and responsibilities of each member of the team;
  • interaction between clinical and community problems; and
  • integration of interdisciplinary training and community service projects.
  • Obligations: Graduate students and residents are expected to participate in the weekly IDT meetings and contribute as is appropriate outside of those meetings as an active member of the IDT.

    Application Process: Graduate students and residents should contact Lew Holloway, NWVRHEC Executive Director or RHEP Site Coordinator in the region of WV that interests them by email or telephone correspondence.

    Application Deadlines: None; however, interested graduate students and residents are encouraged to apply 2-4 weeks prior to the start of their rotation.
