Samuel P. Lazear 1846-1919

Principal of the Glenville Branch of the West Virginia State Normal School
1881-1882

With a vacancy left by T. M. Marshall, the Glenville Normal School was left without a principle. Therefore, a yearly appointment was offered to a recent graduate of Bethany College, Samuel Plummer Lazear. This school year saw an increase of enrollment to 91 students for Lazear and his assistant, John A. Watson, to oversee.

S. P., as Principle Lazear was known, was born in 1846 in Brooke County. He received his higher education at West Liberty Normal School and Bethany College. He graduated in 1879. Following his brief appointment at Glenville, he served as Clerk of Circuit Court in Brooke County for ten years. In 1892, he married Jessie V. Smith, which was nearly 20 years younger than he.

Although little is known about his professional life after serving Brooke County, his death certificate lists his occupation as farmer. He passed away on March 15, 1919, at the age of 72, of rheumatic arthritis. This term was most likely used at the time to describe rheumatic fever. No photograph of S. P. Lazear has been located as-of-yet.
