Peer Tutor - Academic Support Center

Please note that qualifications for all on-campus positions are as follows:

  • Good interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to people from varying educational, cultural, and social backgrounds
  • Must be self-motivated and possess solid time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to maintain confidential student information
  • Good level of responsibility, reliability, and punctuality
  • Appropriate and professional behavior at all times
  • Current enrollment as a GSC student in good standing
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 2.0
The position of Peer Tutor also entails the following qualifications:
  • Meet with students in a one-to-one or small-group basis to integrate learning strategies that address problem areas and promote independent learning
  • Maintain a weekly schedule of available hours in the Academic Support Center for drop-in student appointments
  • Coordinate and document tutoring sessions by submitting regular, detailed, and accurate records of each session
  • Contact appropriate instructors to introduce yourself and obtain any necessary course syllabi, materials, or any other information that might help you effectively tutor
  • Attend orientation and training sessions as required by Academic Support Center staff
  • Assist with additional duties as needed, e.g., covering front desk, answering phones, organizing materials, organizing the computer lab, performing other clerical duties, etc.
  • Make appropriate referrals to other campus resources and inform the Peer Tutor Center Coordinator of any referral
  • Support all tutoring center policies
  • Additional Qualifications:
    • Grade of an A in the specific class you wish to tutor or cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 in overall content area
    • Recommendation from an instructor for the class you wish to tutor or overall content area
