Glenville, WV—The Third Annual Pete and Betsy Barr Professional Development Award has been presented to Glenville State College Associate Professor of Business Cheryl Fleming McKinney, CPA.
The award is funded through the Pete and Betsy Barr Professional Development Endowment Fund established by GSC President Dr. Peter Barr and his wife Betsy. The recipient of the award may use the funds to further his or her professional growth and development. The funds must be used within eighteen months of being awarded.
“We are proud to recognize Cheryl’s lifetime commitment to her profession and the state recognition her work brings to Glenville State College. Her service is truly remarkable,” said Betsy Barr.
The funds from the award may be used to cover transportation, lodging, conference fees, etc. that are connected to professional growth and development. The award may also be used for a specific piece of equipment or tool that would make a job easier or more rewarding.
The grant will be used to enhance McKinney’s professional development through her continued participation in educational events sponsored by the West Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (WVSCPA).
McKinney is the only current academic member of the Board of Directors of the WVSCPA. Her position has brought statewide recognition to Glenville State College through the WVSCPA’s network of accountancy professionals as well as communications with the state business community. The opportunity to network with practicing professionals enhances the awareness of the Glenville State College Accounting program and helps GSC students during the job/internship search process. The WVSCPA Board of Directors meets six times throughout the year at various locations across West Virginia and sponsors more than thirty seminars/conferences throughout the year on a wide variety of accounting topics and issues including auditing, taxation, technology, and financial planning usually featuring nationally recognized presenters.
“It is truly an honor to be named the recipient of the Pete and Betsy Barr Professional Development Award, and I am grateful to have their support while fulfilling my responsibilities as the only academic member of the Board of Directors of the WVSCPA. Without question, my experience on the board has already significantly enhanced my own knowledge and professional development and provided many opportunities to improve the classroom and pre-professional experience for my students as I can share firsthand how many accountancy issues are developing. The Barrs’ commitment to augmenting the professional development of our faculty and staff is indeed commendable, and our accounting program, my students and I will all certainly benefit from their generosity,” said McKinney.
McKinney has been teaching at Glenville State College since 1983. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from West Virginia University in 1982. She was awarded a Masters of Professional Accountancy from West Virginia University in 1984. McKinney has also completed thirty hours of additional graduate credits. In 1986, she received her Certified Public Accountant license from the West Virginia Board of Accountancy.
“This third year winner of the Barr Award exemplifies an employee that has gone the extra mile. She has expended personal funds to meet the costs of representing Glenville State College as the only educator on the Board of Directors of the WVSCPA. Her peers on that board have recounted her many contributions to the board and the accounting field as a whole. Glenville State is fortunate to have an advocate in the highest position of that organization,” said Denny Pounds Vice President for College Advancement and Executive Director of GSC Foundation and Chairman of the Pete and Betsy Barr Professional Development Award Selection Committee.
The 2013 Pete and Betsy Barr Professional Development Award will be available to GSC staff members. Applications for the award will be accepted in the fall of 2012.
