GSC Sweeps Wheeling Jesuit

Morgan Scapellini went one for five with four RBI’s and the game winning homerun as the Lady Pioneers beat Wheeling Jesuit 10-6 in game two

Glenville, WV – The Glenville State Lady Pioneers swept the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals on Wednesday afternoon at the Sue Morris Complex.

In game one, Wheeling Jesuit jumped to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Cardinals would add to their lead in the top of the second as they went up 4-0 over the Lady Pioneers.

GSC would add a run in the bottom of the second when Katelyn Porter hit an RBI double as Lacey Metheney scored cutting into the Cardinals lead 1-4.

But the Lady Pioneers were not done as they scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth. Meagen Lesser hit an RBI single, which drove in Brittany Spencer. Morgan Scarpellini hit an RBI single which scored Lacey Metheney.  Christie Hittel came into pinch hit and was walked with the bases loaded as Meagan Lesser scored giving the Lady Pioneers an 8-4 lead over Wheeling Jesuit.

Wheeling Jesuit would add two more runs in top of the fifth to make it 8-6 GSC, but that’s as close as the Cardinals would get as the Lady Pioneers would go onto win 8-6.

Katelyn Porter went two for three with an RBI and scored a run; Morgan Scarpellini scored a run as she went two for three with an RBI.

Meagan Lesser, Brittany Spencer, Carly Caldon, and Carlee Chatron all had RBI’s in the game.

Shelby Colson pitched four innings allowing three hits, two runs, and struck out four batters.

In the second game, the Cardinals once again took a quick 3-0 lead as they hit two homeruns in the top of the first inning.

Wheeling Jesuit had a chance to add to their lead in the top of the second with the bases loaded and only one out but could not score as GSC got two much needed outs to keep it 3-0.

The Lady Pioneers would tie it at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth as Lacey Metheney hit a three run homerun as Kayleigh Huck and Brittany Spencer both scored.

The Lady Pioneers took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth after Brittany Spencer drove in Carly Caldon for an RBI single.

The Cardinals would tie it up at 4-4 in the top of the seventh inning as it would go to extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, Wheeling Jesuit would score one run as they would go up 5-4 over the Lady Pioneers.

GSC, however, would tie it up again at 5-5 when Katelyn Porter drove in Courtney Rzepka in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The Cardinals would retake the lead in the top of the ninth inning 6-5. GSC would once again tie the game at 6-6 as they headed into the 10th inning.

The Lady Pioneers would hold the Cardinals scoreless in the top of the 10th. Morgan Scarpellini would then hit a grand slam in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Lady Pioneers would beat the Cardinals 10-6 in game two.

Lacey Metheney went two for three with three RBI’s and scored twice. Brittany Spencer went three for five with two RBI’s and scored a run and Morgan Scapellini went one for five with four RBI’s and the game winning homerun.

Meagan Lesser pitched nine innings as she allowed 11 hits, six runs, and struck out two batters.

The Lady Pioneers return to action Saturday, April 14th when they travel to Fairmont for a double header as they take on Fairmont State. Game time is set for 2:00pm.
