Lady Pioneers Fall to Hilltoppers

Freshman Carlee Chatron went three for seven and scored two runs as the Lady Pioneers dropped two games to West Liberty

Glenville, WV – On Tuesday afternoon at the Sue Morris Sports Complex the Glenville State Lady Pioneers softball team battled WVIAC foe West Liberty in a double header.

In the first game, West Liberty got on the scoreboard first in the first inning when Leanna McMillen scored on an error by Lacey Metheney. West Liberty would score again on another error by the Lady Pioneers as Felicia Hulslander scored putting the Hilltoppers up 2-0.

Later in the first inning Julianne Wanda hit a two run homerun as West Liberty took a 4-0 lead over GSC.

The Lady Pioneers would score in the bottom of the first when Charlee Chatron would cross the plate as Kayleigh Huck hit a 4-3 sac as GSC cut the lead to 1-4.

GSC would then cut the lead to one in the bottom of the second when Morgan Scarpellini hit a two run homerun, her sixth of the year, as Shelby Colson scored making it 4-3 West Liberty.

The Hilltoppers would score two more runs in the top of the fifth inning as they took a 6-3 lead over the Lady Pioneers.

GSC would load the bases in the bottom of the seventh with two outs but could not score as they fell to West Liberty 6-3.

Kayleigh Huck would go two for four with an RBI for GSC; while Morgan Scarpellini went two for three with two RBI’s and hit her sixth homerun of the season.

Brittany May pitched all seven innings for the Lady Pioneers as she gave up seven hits, six runs, and struck out three batters.

In game two of the double header, the Lady Pioneers scored first in the bottom of the first inning when Carlee Chatron scored on an error by Jamee Burke as GSC took a 1-0 lead.

But West Liberty would take the lead in the top of the third when Maggie Starr hit a two run homerun as Janea Cockrell crossed the plate as the Hilltoppers went up 2-1.

The Hilltoppers would add to their lead in the top of the fourth inning when Stacy Sumner hit a solo homerun as they took a 3-1 lead.

West Liberty would continue to add to their lead in the top of the seventh inning when Irene Fadul hit a double as Jennifer Young would score and Maggie Starr would drive home Janea Cockrell as they went up 5-1 over the Lady Pioneers.

The Lady Pioneers would get on base in the bottom of the seventh with two outs but could not score a run as they fell in game two 5-1.

Kayleigh Huck went two for three for GSC while Carlee Chatron went one for three and scored a run.

Mehgen Lesser pitched five innings as she allowed four hits, three runs, and struck out four batters.

The Lady Pioneers return to action Friday, April 20th when the University of Charleston travels to Glenville. Game time is set for 3:00pm.
