Glenville, WV – With the 2012 college football season just around the corner we are going to take a closer look at the GSC Pioneer offense, which returns a lot of talent in 2012.
The offensive line could be the most talented group on the football field in 2012. They return three starters from the 2011 team, including 1st Team All-Conference offensive tackle Mark Jackson. The 6’6” 325 pound tackle will look to have a huge senior season. Mark has great athletic ability and will try to be the anchor of the OL protecting the QB’s blind side. Also returning on the o-line is Honorable all WVIAC in 2011 junior center Jon Rasnick. Jon is a smart player who will work to help the Pioneers have a successful 2012 season.
Senior Jon Wilson also returns in 2012 which he started the last two years at right guard. Jon has had a very good off season and looks to have his best season yet. Due to graduation two positions are up for grabs as the Pioneers have a big group of returners and newcomers fighting for playing time. They are led by junior returners Everett Burns, David Chestnut, Ryan Sims and Red-shirt Freshman Richard Sloan. New Comers looking to make an immediate impact on the O Line are Illinois transfer Leon Hill and junior college transfer William Coleman (College of Dupage.)
The Tight End position will be a wide open battle going into camp. Jawaan Mosby leads a group young guys that will compete to see playing time at the position.
The quarterback position looks to be a very competitive battle that will probably take most of camp to sort out. The group is led by senior Darold Hughes, who threw for 2,002 yards and had 12 touchdowns passes. He started 9 games in 2011 and 8 in 2010. Steffen Colon started two games last year and played in seven games throwing for 785 yards and 8 touchdowns. Tony Guidugli, who had a nice spring with the Pioneers, should challenge for the QB spot.
The Pioneers don’t return a lot of game experienced running backs but have several guys that will look to step up this season. Senior D’Andre Johnson and junior Derek McRae return to the backfield with the most experience. D’Andre sat out 2011 but has over 1000 yards in his career at Glenville. Derek played in nine games in 2011 rushing for 110 yards and had two touchdowns. Other guys that look to have breakout years in 2012 are Sophomore Quin Thornton, Redshirt freshman Rahman Lee and Darren Holbrook.
The Pioneer wide receiver group probably has the biggest questions going into fall camp after losing their top six receivers to graduation. Coming out of spring the group was led by Senior Ronnie Mills, junior Mike Evans, and Red-shirt freshmen Darion Cleckley, Isreal Richardson, and Tyler Gardiner. Look for some new additions this fall to come in and compete right away.
The Pioneers open up the 2012 season at Carson-Newman on Thursday August 30th at 7:00 pm. The Pioneers will have an open scrimmage to the public on Wednesday, August 15th at 3:30 pm, please come out and watch a preview of the 2012 GSC Pioneer football team.
