2012 GSC Football: A Closer Look at Defense

James Washington and the Pioneer defense will look to have a stong impact on the 2012 season

Glenville, WV – Today we are going to take a closer look at the Glenville State College football team’s defense for the 2012 season.  The GSC Pioneers defense is in the middle of their 2012 camp working hard to be a much improved unit from a year ago.

The Pioneers defense returns seven starters from last year team led by LB Nate Ingersoll, FS Terry Reese, and DE James Washington.

At the defensive line position the Pioneers have three returning starters and 6 of their top 8 guys returning for 2012.  They are led by WVIAC 1st team All-Conference defensive end James Washington.   James racked up 55 total tackle and tied a GSC recorded with 10 sacks last year.  The two other starters returning are DE Kyle Warner and DT Ricky Booker.  Other key returners with lots of playing experience are Gary Henderson, Hunter McWorter and Clifford Mason.  Look for newcomers Jonathan Butler, Brian Lambert, DJ Shepherd and Jonathan Dupree to add some depth inside. “Everything starts up front with our defense, for us to be successful they must play violent and full speed all the time.  I really like our talent up front, a group of unselfish guys that want to win, a group willing to do what our coaches ask of them.”

The Linebacker core is led by Nate Ingersoll he led the 2011 defense with 90 total tackles and one interception.  Other guys who started games and played a lot of snaps at linebacker were Max Beauburn, Greg Bell, Terrence Yarborough and Mark Fowler.  Several new guys who should make an immediate impact are Manny Hernandez, Tray Lazenby, Taylor Coleman and James Johnson. “There are some unknowns at LB, our returners are playing hard but are really being pushed by this new group. There is some great competition at each spot.  I expect a much improved group of Linebackers that should be fun to watch.”

At the defensive back position the Pioneers return starters safety Terry Reese and corner Brandon Absher.   Terry was the team’s second leading tackler with 73 total tackles last season.   Brandon racked up 36 total tackles in 2011. Returners in the mix are Jermane Allen, Adrian Davis, JP McClung, David Sowell and Jeff Kidder.  Newcomers this fall that will compete to start and play a lot are Darren Elliott, Demetrius Quarles, Clinton Perry and Tyrone Richardson. “The defensive back group seems to be very athletic and much deeper in numbers than years past.  Hopefully they can continue to improve and make a lot of plays for us this year.”

The Pioneers will have their first scrimmage of the 2012 season this Wednesday, August 15th at 3:30pm and welcomes everyone out to watch. The Pioneers open up the season on Thursday, August 30th at Carson-Newman kickoff is set for 7:00pm.
