West Liberty, WV – The Glenville State Pioneers football team picked up a nail biting victory on the road at West Liberty 17-14.
The Pioneers took their first possession of the game, converted a fourth down conversion and took the ball all the way to the West Liberty’s 10 yard line but Darold Hughes threw an interception as the Pioneers turned the ball over to the Hilltoppers.
But on the Hilltoppers first offensive play of the game, Dominic Cooper fumbled the ball as GSC’s linebacker Nate Ingersoll would recover the ball at the West Liberty’s 6 yard line.
The Pioneers would then take advantage and Hughes would fine Darian Cleckley in the endzone for a 6 yard touchdown pass on the first play as the Pioneers took a 7-0 lead at the 9:16 mark in the first quarter.
The Pioneers defense would then force the Hilltoppers to turn the ball over on a fourth down attempt.
The Pioneers would then go up 14-0, as Hughes would hit a streaking Orlandus Harris for a 29 yard touchdown with only 16 second left in the first quarter.
West Liberty would finally find the endzone at the 9:11 mark in the second quarter when Isiah Moddy would score on a run from 15 yards out as they made it 14-7, Pioneers.
Both teams would then battle back and fourth throughout the rest of the second quarter, despite Darold Hughes throwing 3 first half interceptions, the Pioneers would end up with a 14-7 lead heading into halftime.
In the second half the Pioneers would build their lead to 17-7 at the 11:36 mark in the third quarter on a 47 yard field goal by Eddie McKay.
But West Liberty was not going anywhere without a fight as they would put together a drive and score on a Kenjay Trueblood 2 yard touchdown rush as the Hilltoppers made it 17-14, at the 7:26 mark in the fourth quarter.
The Pioneers would then drive all the way to the Hilltoppers 35 yard line but Hughes would then throw his fifth interception as West Liberty would get another chance to tie the game or take the lead, but the Pioneers defense would then force the Hilltoppers three and out.
After the Pioneers were forced to punt on their next possession with only 1:07 left to go in the game, it would give West Liberty one last chance.
But West Liberty would throw four incomplete passes as time expired as the Pioneers would hold on for a 17-14 win over the Hilltoppers.
The Hilltoppers out gained the Pioneers on offense 358 to 285, but both teams racked up the penalty yards as West Liberty had 13 penalties for 136 yards while the Pioneers had 12 penalties for 86 yards.
GSC was led by Rahmann Lee on the ground with 21 carries for 81 yards.
Darold Hughes went 19 for 34 for 175 yards with 2 touchdowns but threw 5 interceptions. Hughes also rushed the ball 10 times for 21 yards.
Darian Cleckley caught 5 passes for 36 yards and a touchdown while Orlandus Harris caught 4 passes for 73 yards and a touchdown.
Darren Elliott led the defense with 9.5 tackles and an interception while Devin Cain racked up 7 tackles in the game.
West Liberty was led by Isiah Moody with 39 rushing yards on 8 carries and a touchdown.
Dylan Lagrade replaced LD Crow in the second quarter as he went 14 for 36 for 232 yards.
Brandon Schroeder caught 8 passes for 108 yards.
Kyle Agustin had 9.5 tackles for the Hilltoppers while Marquis Bradley had 6.5 tackles.
The Pioneers are now 2-3 (2-0) on the year, they return to action next Saturday, October 6th when they travel to Athens, WV to take on Concord University. Kickoff is set 2:00 pm.
