Glenville, WV – The Glenville State Pioneers football team defeated WVIAC Conference foe West Virginia State on Saturday afternoon, in only the Pioneers second home game of the 2012 season, 29-12.
The Pioneers would find the endzone first on their third possession of the game when Justin Feagin, who replaced a concussed Darold Hughes, hit Rahmann Lee who did the rest and took it 34 yards to the endzone. However, West Virginia State would block the point after attempt.
GSC would then take a 12-0 lead at the 2:04 mark in the second quarter when Rahmann Lee took it in from 5 yards out, once again the PAT was blocked by the West Virginia State Yellow Jackets.
The Pioneers thought would take a 12-0 lead into halftime.
On the second play of the third quarter, the Yellow Jackets would find the endzone when Ricky Phillips hit Ervin Kent for 73 yards, the PAT was blocked by GSC, making it 12-6.
But the Pioneers would answer on their next possession as they drove 7 plays for 46 yards as Rahmann Lee scored again this time from a yard out, putting GSC up 19-6.
On the Yellow Jackets next possession the Pioneers would force a three and out.
GSC would then drive 10 plays for 37 yards but had to settle for a 32 yard field goal from Colston Bayless, as the Pioneers took a 22-6 lead.
At the start of the fourth quarter, GSC would again find the endzone, this time as Qiun Thornton took the hand off and ran 84 yards to pay dirt, as GSC took a 29-6 lead.
West Virginia State would find the endzone late when Ricky Phillips ran it in from 4 yards out as the Yellow Jackets made 29-12.
But it wasn’t enough as the Pioneers would cruise to a 29-12 victory.
The Pioneers rushed for 275 yards on the day while the GSC defense held the Yellow Jackets to 83 rushing yards.
GSC also out gained the West Virginia State in overall offensive yards; GSC gained 421 yards while West Virginia State gained 290 yards.
The Pioneers though had a ton of penalties as they had a total of 11 for 167 yards, while West Virginia State had 2 for 20 yards.
GSC also scored on all 3 red zone chances.
The Pioneers were led on the ground by Quin Thornton as he rushed for 101 yards on 5 carries and a touchdown. Rahmann Lee carried the ball for 92 yards on 15 carries for 2 touchdowns.
Justin Feagin went 7 for 18 for 159 yards with a touchdown while he also rushed for 60 yards.
Rahmann Lee caught 3 passes for 78 yards and a touchdown, while Orlandus Harris also caught 3 passes for 43 yards.
Devin Cain led the GSC defense in tackles with 8.5 while Nate Ingersoll had 3.5 tackles and an interception.
West Virginia State was led by Aubura Taylor as he rushed the ball for 110 yards on 30 carries.
Ricky Phillips went 15 for 29 for 207 yards and a touchdown.
Ervin Kent caught 5 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown.
Calem Bridgette had 6 tackles and Edward Blair had 5.5 in the game.
The Pioneers return to action next Saturday, October 20th when they travel to Buckhannon as they take on West Virginia Wesleyan. Kickoff is set for 1:00pm.
