Demetrius Quarles Named WVIAC Defensive Player of the Week

Quarles, a 5’9” junior defensive back from Woodbridge, Va., had three interceptions in the win over No. 25 Charleston

Princeton, WV – Lavaughn Hughes, Nate Montana and Demetrius Quarles have been named WVIAC Football Players of the Week, as announced by the league office.

West Virginia Wesleyan’s Montana picked up WVIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors while Glenville State’s Quarles earned the WVIAC Defensive Player of the Week award. The Bobcats’ Hughes was tabbed as the WVIAC Special Teams Player of the Week.

Montana, a 6’4” senior quarterback from Concord, Calif., completed 28 passes for 414 yards and four touchdowns in a win at West Virginia State. His touchdown passes went to three different receivers. The scores covered 20, 58, 4 and 28 yards, respectively. He also had a long of 63 yards.

Quarles, a 5’9” junior defensive back from Woodbridge, Va., had three interceptions in the win over No. 25 Charleston. All three interceptions were in the red zone. Quarles picked off one pass in the end zone and returned it 27 yards. He also tallied seven tackles, five of which were solo stops. The victory improved the Pioneers’ league record to 5-1, moving the team into a tie for first.

Hughes, a 5’9” senior wide receiver from Upper Marlboro, Md., had a huge all-around game for the Bobcats. However, his plays on special teams changed the game. With WVWC up 14-7, Hughes circled under a punt and returned it 89 yards for a 21-7 lead near the midway point of the second quarter. With the score the same just three minutes into the second half, Hughes returned another punt for a touchdown. This time, he went 79 yards for the score. He had 392 all-purpose yards, including 182 on punt returns. Hughes added two touchdown receptions.
