West Liberty, WV – The Glenville State men’s basketball team suffered a tough loss to #1 team in Division II West Liberty, 105-98 on the road Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers got on the scoreboard first, 2-0 after Lamar Mallory hit a jumper at the 19:36 mark. But the Hilltoppers ended up having a five point lead, 15-10 at the 14:55 mark.
However the Pioneers would come right back and tie it at 15 all at the 14:20 mark.
Then the Pioneers would take a five point lead, 40-35 with 7:06 left till halftime. But West Liberty would then go on an 11-2 run and take a nine point lead into halftime, 57-48.
In the second half the Hilltoppers would extend their lead to 15 points, 65-50 at the 17:45 mark.
GSC would then cut the lead to 11, 75-64 after Lamar Mallory drilled a jumper at the 13:40 mark.
The Pioneers would continue the good play and cut the Hiltoppers lead to seven at the 12:14 mark after Jamel Morris hit a jumper, 77-70.
GSC would then cut the lead to only three points, 83-80 when Brien Winston hit a jumper at the 9:25 mark.
The Pioneers would then trade several baskets back and fourth with the Hilltoppers, but after several questionable calls from the refs West Liberty would lead by six, 91-85 with only 6:17 to play.
The Pioneers would not give up as they would once again cut the Hilltoppers lead to three, 97-94 with 1:45 left to play.
But it wouldn’t be enough as West Liberty, the number one team in Division II, would walk away with a seven point win, 105-98.
The Pioneers shot 52 percent from the floor while the Hilltoppers shot 50 percent.
GSC was out rebounded by West Liberty 43 to 37.
The Pioneers were led by Kevin Gray as he scored 21 points and grabbed six rebounds. Jamel Morris scored 20 points in game while Joe Ballard chipped in with 19 points and six rebounds.
DJ Blanks also scored in double figures for GSC as he scored 12 points and had six assists.
Brien Winston pulled down a team high seven rebounds.
West Liberty had five players score in double figures with CJ Hester leading the way with a game high 30 points and a game high 14 rebounds.
Bubby Goodwin chipped in with 18 points for the Hilltoppers.
The Pioneers return to action Monday, December 10th when the University of Charleston travels to Glenville. Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm.
