Glenville, WV – Glenville State men’s basketball team was lead by Jamel Morris, scoring a career high 37 points, as the Pioneers defeated the Salem International University Tigers, 89-83 on New Year’s Eve.
GSC jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead at the 16:44 mark of the first half, but the Tigers would come right back and tie the game at 24 all with 7:27 left till halftime.
Despite the Tigers comeback the Pioneers still managed to take a 12 point lead into halftime, 44-32.
In the second half both teams would battle back and fourth. The Tigers would take their first lead of the game at the 16:36 mark, 48-47.
Salem would extend their lead to four 55-51 with 12:47 left to play. GSC would come right back and tie the game 64 all with 8:06 left in the game.
After a turnover by the Pioneers Lamont Cole the Tigers would come down and go up by five points, 78-73 with under 5:00 minutes left.
However the Pioneers would weather the storm and build their own five point lead, 86-81 with only 26 seconds left to play.
After several attempts by Salem the Pioneers would come away with 89-83 win.
The Pioneers won the rebounding battle as they out rebounded Salem 43 to 40.
Jamel Morris scored a career high 37 points as he led the Pioneers. Morris also handed out a game high five assist and grabbed a team high five rebounds.
Kevin Gray was the only other player to score in double figures and he scored 15 points for GSC.
The Tigers had four players score in double figures with Jonathan Roper leading the way with 20 points. Raymar Porter chipped in with 17 points.
The Pioneers are now on a three game winning streak. They return to action Saturday, January 5th when they travel to Institute, West Virginia to battle WVIAC foe West Virginia State. Game time is set for 4:00 pm.
