GSC Hosting Marketing Conference for Area Farmers

Glenville, WV—Farmers in West Virginia are encouraged to attend the 2013 Farm Opportunities Day Conference on Saturday, January 26th from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Mollohan Campus Community Center at Glenville State College.

The conference is a collaborative effort of Glenville State College, the West Virginia Small Business Development Center, and the West Virginia University Extension Service and Small Farm Center. The goal of the conference is to help farmers learn how they can profit from the multi-million dollar food market in central West Virginia.

“Our goal is to bring some of the services to local farmers that were not available to them without traveling to other parts of the state. There is a great opportunity for local farmers to take advantage of the opportunity to cash in on the need for locally grown food. The food industry is experiencing a shift to locally grown food and they need more suppliers. This seminar will highlight the many opportunities that are available to local farmers,” said Rob Hinton, Small Business Coach for the GSC Small Business Development Center.

Those attending will receive training targeted to help new and existing farmers maximize their potential and profits. The conference will highlight market demand and enterprise expansion opportunities for farmers of small farms in West Virginia. This intensive farm opportunities training will include trusted research and advice from many state and local farm experts.

Participants will be able to choose sessions that include topics such as Value-Added Animal Production and Marketing; Season Extension and Institutional Marketing; Farm Business Management; and Risk Management.

A resource fair will also be held during the lunch break. Approximately twenty businesses, organizations, and outreach institutions will be represented. Attendees will be able to make connections and learn about local business opportunities from representatives who have backgrounds in everything from risk management to farm credit. Lunch and snacks will be provided to attendees.

The registration fee for this one-day event is $20 for registrations received after January 16th. Registration will be accepted at the door but pre-registration is preferred to help with logistics and food preparation. There is no cost for attendees under the age of eighteen; however, registration is still required.

“We encourage anyone that is interested to join us for this seminar including working farmers who want to expand their operations and hobby farmers who want to expand beyond farmers markets. We hope this will be the first of many similar seminars designed to assist local farmers become more profitable,” said Hinton.
