Glenville, WV – Glenville State forward Lamar Mallory hit four free throws as he helped propel the Pioneers over West Virginia State Saturday afternoon, 74-71.
In the first half, both teams went back and fourth but West Virginia State went on an eight point run as they took the lead at halftime, 30-38.
In the second half, the Pioneers tried to cut into the Yellow Jackets lead and at the 10:01 mark GSC cut West Virginia States lead to one, 57-58. At the 3:48 mark the Pioneers took the lead 65-64, but West Virginia State came right back and retook the lead 65-66.
With only 43 seconds left GSC would tie the game at 70 all. After the Pioneers defense caused a big turnover Lamar Mallory put GSC up 72-70, after he hit two free throws.
Again, the Pioneers would play good defense as Lamar Mallory pulled down the rebound, West Virginia State would foul Lamar and send him to the line again. Once again Lamar would hit both free throws as GSC went up 74-70.
After a last chance by West Virginia State came up short the Pioneers would walk away with a thrilling 74-71 victory.
The Pioneers won the rebounding battle 31 to 30.
Lamar Mallory posted a double double in the win as he scored a game high 22 points and grabbed a game high 15 rebounds.
Kevin Gray, hit five three pointers in the game, finishing with 15 points. Jamel Morris scored 12 points and dished out six assists while DJ Blanks chipped in with 10 points and dished out five assists.
West Virginia State was led by Jalen Walker as he scored 21 points. Anton Hutchins chipped in with 11 points.
The Pioneers return to action Monday, January 21st when Fairmont State travels to Glenville. Game time is set for 7:30pm.
