Charleston, WV – The Glenville State men’s basketball squad suffered a two point loss, 71-69, to the University of Charleston on the road Monday night.
Both teams battled back and fourth in the early minutes of the first half, but around the 11:00 minute mark UC went on a run to build a 19 point lead, 33-14, with 6:27 to play till halftime.
However, the Pioneers would make their own run and cut the Golden Eagles lead to seven, 37-30 heading into halftime.
In the second half, once again, UC would go on a run and build a 13 point lead, 56-43. The Pioneers would build a comeback and cut the lead to one point, 70-69 with only nine seconds left to play in the game.
After a made free throw by UC, making it 71-69, the Pioneers would have one last chance to come back. Kevin Gray would attempt a three pointer but it would fall short as the Pioneers fell to the Golden Eagles, 71-69.
GSC had 19 fast break points while UC only had nine fast break points. The Pioneers bench out-scored the Golden Eagles bench 24 to 19.
Lamont Cole came off the bench to lead GSC in scoring with 20 points and six rebounds. Jamel Morris scored 19 points in the losing effort and pulled down six rebounds.
DJ Blanks also scored in double figures as he scored 13 points and handed out three assists. Lamar Mallory led GSC in rebounding with nine in the game.
UC was led by Terrell Lipkins as he scored 20 points and had 11 rebounds for a double double. Robbie Dreher and Aleksander Kesic both scored 12 points in the game.
The Pioneers return to action this Thursday at home when Concord travel to Glenville. Game time is set for 7:30 pm.
