Shepherdstown, W. Va. – The Glenville State College men’s basketball team is heading to the WVIAC Tournament Quarterfinals on Thursday at the Charleston Civic Center as they went on the road and defeated the Shepherd University Rams Tuesday night, 88-83.
In the first half of play both teams went back and fourth, but the Pioneers would end the first half on a run as they would take a three-point lead into half, 41-38.
In the second half Shepherd would come out and tie the game at 49 all at the 15:23 minute mark.
However, GSC would come right back and take a four point lead, 58-54 with 13:03 left in the game. The Pioneers would take that lead and extend it to 11 points, 70-59 at the 10:40 minute mark.
Shepherd would continue to battle and cut the Pioneers lead to two-points, after two made free throws, with 31 seconds left in the game.
But that’s as close as Shepherd would get as the Pioneers walked away with a five point road victory, 88-83.
The Pioneers out-shot the Rams as they shot 49 percent from the floor while Shepherd shot 37 percent.
The Pioneers bench out-scored the Rams bench 27 to 15. GSC also won the rebounding battle as they out rebound the Rams 43 to 36.
Each team committed 13 turnovers in the contest.
GSC was led by Jamel Morris as he scored 22 points and grabbed five rebounds.
Kevin Gray and Lamar Mallory both scored 13 points apiece. Mallory also pulled down 12 rebounds for a double double.
Freshman point guard DJ Blanks chipped in with 11 points while JJ Vazquez scored 10 points and handed out four assists in the win.
Shepherd was led by Chad Moore as he scored a game high 29 points while Austin Cunningham scored 14 points in the loss.
With the win the Pioneers advance to the WVIAC Tournament Quarterfinals at the Charleston Civic Center as they take on the Alderson-Broaddus Battlers Thursday. Tip-Off is set for 1:00pm.
