Pioneers Fall to Alderson-Broaddus in WVIAC Quarterfinals

Lamar Mallory posted a double double in the loss to Alderson-Broaddus with 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Charleston, W. Va. – The Glenville State men’s basketball team lost to the Alderson-Broaddus Battlers on Thursday afternoon in the WVIAC Quarterfinals, 69-82.

In the first half of action Alderson-Broaddus would take a 6-0 lead over the Pioneers, but then DJ Blanks would score as he put the first two points for GSC on the score board, 6-2.

The Battlers would later extend their lead to eight points over GSC, 10-2, at the 15:19 minute mark.

However the Pioneers would fight back and tie the game at 13 all as Jamel Morris hit a deep two with 11:16 left till the half.

And the Pioneers would continue the momentum as GSC would take their first lead of the game as Kevin Gray hit a deep three-pointer putting the Pioneers up 16-13 with 10:46 left.

Both teams would battle back and fourth the remainder of the first half but Alderson-Broaddus would make a late run and go to halftime up seven over the Pioneers, 40-33.

In the second half GSC would score the first two points as Brien Winston made a layup pulling GSC within five, 40-35.

Then GSC’s Andy Dollman would come in and hit a huge three-pointer to bringing the Pioneers within two points, 43-41 with 15:41 left in the game.

GSC would then tie it up at 45 all with 13:23 left to play, after DJ Blanks made a nice little runner in the lane.

And on the next possession JJ Vazquez would come up with a steal and convert it into two points as GSC took the lead 47-45 with 13:00 left to play.

AB would then retake the lead on their next possession however after and big three-pointer by Kevin Gray and a huge slam dunk by Lamar Mallory the Pioneers would go up by one, 54-53 with 9:40 left to play.

But the Battlers would battle back and retake the lead on the next possession, 55-54, 8:30 minute mark.

Then with under 7:00 minutes to play AB would build a seven point over the Pioneers, 63-56.

The Battlers would then build a 10 point lead with under 3:00 minutes to play, however the Pioneers would cut into the lead seven but that’s as close as the Pioneers would get as the Battlers would go on to defeat GSC in the WVIAC Quarterfinals, 82-69.

The Battlers out rebounded the Pioneers 48-28.

The Pioneers defense caused 17 turnovers in the game while they only committed 12 in the game.

Pioneers leading scorers were: Lamar Mallory with 18 points, Kevin Gray and Jamel Morrs both finished with 12 points.

GSC’s leading rebounder was Lamar Mallory with 13 rebounds, 7 offensive and 6 defensive, as he posted a double double. Blanks had 9 points in the loss.

The Battlers leading rebounder was Adam Kline with 11 rebounds. Their leading scorer was Kurklin Bohanon with 29 points.

With the loss the Pioneers season comes to an end. GSC finished up their season 13-16 and 8-14 in conference play.
