Glenville, W. Va. – The Glenville State Pioneers split a double header with Rio Grande on Saturday, march 9th.
In the first game, the Pioneers got down early as Rio Grande jumped out to an early 2-0 lead at the end of the first inning, however GSC would then tie it up in the bottom of the first as Ethan Szabo drove in Heath Swisher and Jeremy Tindell, tying it up at 2-2.
In the bottom of the second, with two outs, the Pioneers would get their bats swinging as they would score four runs to take a 6-2 lead.
Both teams would go scoreless in the third inning.
Rio Grande would add a run in the top of the fifth to bring the Red Storm within three runs, 6-3.
But in the bottom of the fifth the Pioneers would come back and score two runs as they increased their lead to five, 8-3.
The Red Storm would add a run in the top of the sixth inning making it, 8-4.
In the top of the seventh inning Rio Grande would add two runs to make it close but the Pioneers would hold on for the win, 8-7.
The win is the first win for the Pioneers in the 2013 season.
GSC had their bats going as they finished with 12 hits in the game.
Sean Garza went 1 for 3 with 2 RBI’s, he also scored a run. Jeremy Tindell went 1 for 4 with 2 RBI’s. Also for the Pioneers Heath Swisher went 2 for 3 and scored 2 runs.
Sean Garza is the winning pitcher as he pitched 4.1 innings allowing 5 hits, 3 runs, and struck out 2 batters.
For Rio Grande Chris Ford went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s and scored 2 runs.
Heath Dettwiller is the losing pitcher; he pitched 1.2 innings allowing 4 hits, 6 runs, and walked 1 batter.
In the second game of the double header the Pioneers took a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off of a solo homerun by Ethan Szabo.
However the Red Storm would come back and have a huge third inning as Rio Grande scored 11 runs as they took a, 11-1 lead.
Rio Grande would add two more runs in the top of the seventh off of a two run homerun as they took a 13-1 lead.
The Pioneers could never get their bats going as they fell to Rio Grande 13-1.
Ethan Szabo went 2 for 3 in the game he also hit a homerun scoring the only run for GSC.
Danny McCormick pitched 5 innings as he allowed 5 hits, 5 runs, and struck out 1 batter.
Rio Grande was led by Chris Ford as he went 2 for 4 with 4 RBI’s and also scored 2 runs.
Zach Dulmer picked up the win for Rio Grande. He pitched 4 innings allowing 2 hits, 1 run, and struck out 5 batters.
The Pioneers return to action Monday, March 11th when Wheeling Jesuit travels to Glenville for the first conference game of the 2013 season. Game time is set for 1:00pm.
