Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Baseball team swept the University of Charleston on Friday afternoon.
In the first game the Pioneers would come back and win as Kenneth Finzel would get a hit and after an error by Charleston Tucker Abrruzzino would score in the bottom of the seventh inning as GSC would come away with a 2-1 victory.
Both teams would go scoreless through four innings.
The Pioneers would score first in the bottom of the fifth inning as Kenneth Finzel would score on a wild pitch but Charleston would come back and later tie it up at 1-1 in the top of the sixth inning.
However GSC would go on to score the winning run in the bottom of the seventh off of a Charleston error as they took game one, 2-1.
In the second game of the double header Charleston would get on the board first as they scored four runs in the top of the first inning to take a 4-0 lead.
GSC would get on the board in the bottom of the second inning as Heath Swisher crossed the plate as Charleston made an error, making it 4-1 Charleston.
Charleston would extend their lead to five in the top of the third inning as they scored two more runs, making it 6-1.
Sean Garza would then bring the Pioneers within one as he hit a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth inning making it, 6-5.
The Pioneers would then take the lead in the bottom of the fifth as they scored three runs to take a 9-6 lead.
GSC would continue their good play as they would score three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 12-6 lead as they would go on to win 12-6 and sweep Charleston.
In game one, Jeremy Tindell went 1 for 3 in the game while Ethan Szabo went 2 for 3.
Also for GSC Sam Hanke went 2 for 2 while Kenneth Finzel had an RBI and scored a run.
Jonathan Murphy pitched the whole game as he gave up 3 hits, 1 run, and struck out 4 batters.
In the second game, Sean Garza went 3 for 5 with 5 RBI’s and scored 2 runs. Justin Lewis went 2 for 3 with 4 RBI’s and scored 3 runs.
Josh Laramore pitched for GSC as he went 5 innings allowing 5 hits, no runs, and struck out 4 batters.
GSC returns to action Saturday, March 30th as they finish their three game series with Charleston. Game time is set for 11:00 am.
