Scarpellini, Griffin, And Cobb Earn WVIAC Honors

Glenville State’s Morgan Scarpellini and West Virginia State’s Desiree Giffin have been named co-WVIAC Players of the Week

Princeton, W. Va. – Glenville State’s Morgan Scarpellini and West Virginia State’s Desiree Giffin have been named co-WVIAC Players of the Week while Fairmont State’s Chelsea Cobb has been named the WVIAC Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the league office.

Giffin, a 5’3” senior catcher/infielder from Hagerstown, Md., registered a .433 batting average last week. She belted out 13 hits for the week. In the win over Davis & Elkins, Giffin blasted two three-run homers in the first inning and later added a double. Against the Senators, she totaled eight of her 13 RBI for the week.

Scarpellini, a 5’10” junior infielder from Hamlin, W. Va., led the Pioneers to an undefeated week and first place in the WVIAC standings. She went 10-for-17 (.589) with nine RBI while scoring seven runs. Scarpellini added two round-trippers on the week.

Cobb, a 5’10” senior from Dunbar, W. Va., posted a 4-0 week for the Falcons. She posted 35 strikeouts and walked just two batters while tossing four complete games. The senior struck out 15 batters and allowed just three hits and no runs in her first appearance of the week against Salem International. The next day against the Battlers, she struck out 11 batters in another three-hit shutout for FSU. On Saturday against Wheeling Jesuit, Cobb picked up the victory after giving up just two runs on five hits and striking out five batters. She wrapped up the week with a five-inning victory against West Liberty, giving up just two hits.
