GSC Pioneers A Closer Look: Pioneers Returning Players on Defense

Defensive End Gary Henderson will look to have a huge 2013 season

Glenville, W.Va. - As the GSC Pioneer football team continues Fall Camp as they get ready for their season opener on the road at VMI on September, 7th.

This week we are going to look at the returning Pioneer players on defense.

On the defensive line the Pioneers return several key players. Gary Henderson, a native of St. Louis, Missouri, started all 11 games last season as he racked up 48 total tackles; he had five tackles for loss, four sacks, and an interception. Also at defensive end the Pioneers return Kyle Warner, a native of Gassaway, West Virginia, Warner started all 11 games where he had 23 total tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss.

Also on the defensive line is the 2011 WVIAC Freshman Defensive Player of the Year Hunter McWhorter, a native of Horner, West Virginia. Last season McWhorter played in all 11 games where he racked up 30 total tackles and a sack.

Ian Andrew and Brian Lambert both had a ton of playing time and will look to add depth to the defensive line.

At the linebacker position the Pioneers return their leading tackler from last season in James Johnson. A native e of Fairfax, Virginia he racked up 92 total tackles last season, with 2.5 tackles for loss and an interception. Devin Cain also returns this season, Cain started all 11 games last season at middle linebacker. Last season Cain had 78 total tackles, with 7 tackle for loss, and a sack.

Also looking returning and looking to compete for playing time this year are Emmanuel Hernandez, JP McClung, Mark Fowler, and Taylor Coleman.

And at the defensive back positions the Pioneers return all four starters from last season. At free safety Terry Reese, a native of Washington D.C., had 74 total tackles a year ago and an interception. While Adrian Davis returns at the other safety position. Davis racked up 17 total tackles last season. At the corner back position Darren Elliott and Demetrius Quarles both return. Elliott, a native of Los Angeles, California, started all 11 games last season where he racked up 73 total tackles and had two interceptions. While Demetrius Quarles returns at the other cornerback spot. Qualres, a native of Woodbridge, Virginia, started all 11 games last season where he had 38 total tackles and five interceptions. Jermane Allen, Jeff Kidder, and John Howard also return this season.
