Lexington, Va. – The Glenville State Pioneer football team went on the road to the NCAA Division I FCS School, Virginia Military Institution all they could handle but feel short 27-34, in the 2013 season opener.
VMI would get on the board first at the 7:59 mark in the first quarter, as they drove seven plays 77 yards as they took a 7-0 lead over the Pioneers.
Neither team would find the endzone again as the first quarter would come to an end, but VMI would add to their lead as they would go up 14-0 early in the second quarter.
However the Pioneers wouldn’t get rattled as they would take their next possession and drive 80 yards in seven plays as Steffen Colon scored on a one yard run, making it 7-14.
But VMI would add another late score right before halftime as they would take a 21-7 lead at the half.
In the third quarter VMI would again add to their score making it 27-7, as they missed the point after.
Just when things looked like they might get out of hand for the Pioneers they would put together another drive, this time marching 52 yards on five plays as Steffen Colon hit Delvon Purvis for a 24 yard touchdown, making it 14-27.
The Pioneers would again find the endzone with 1:33 left in the third quarter as Rahmann Lee scored, this touchdown run coming from 51 yards out, as GSC pulled with seven points 20-27. However the Pioneers would also miss the point after attempt.
VMI would extend their lead to 14 points as they would score early in the fourth quarter, taking a 34-20 lead.
However, the Pioneers would again pull within seven points as Steffen Colon hit Rahmann Lee for a 36 yard touchdown pass with 6:48 left to play in the fourth quarter.
After the Pioneers’ defense made a huge stop, the Pioneers would get one last drive to try and tie it up. The Pioneers would drive it 93 yards all the way to the VMI one yard line but, after two quarterback sneaks and a Rahmann Lee run the, Pioneers would come up short as the clock would expire as GSC would fall to VMI 34-27.
The Pioneers rushed for 178 yards while the GSC defense held VMI to 144 rushing yards
GSC gained 488 total yards of offense while VMI gained 458.
Rahmann Lee carried the ball 23 times for 146 yards, and scored a touchdown run. Lee also caught three passes for 79 yards and a receiving touchdown.
Steffen Colon led GSC in passing as he went 22 for 38 for 310 yards and two touchdowns. Colon also scored a touchdown with his legs.
Delvon Purivs was his favorite target as he caught seven passes for 82 yards and a touchdown. Tight end Jake Harper hauled in four passes for 75 yards.
James Johnson led the Pioneers in tackles with 5.5, while Manny Hernandez and Terry Reese both finished with 5 tackles each.
The Pioneers are on the road again next week as they travel to West Liberty for their first ever Mountain East Conference game. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm.
