West Liberty, W.Va. – On a beautiful day for football in mid September the Glenville State Pioneer football team traveled to take on rival West Liberty in their first ever match up in the new Mountain East Conference (MEC).
But the game would not go as planned for the Pioneers as they would fall to West Liberty 13-16.
It was a defensive game throughout most of it, as both teams would go scoreless until 13:23 in the second quarter when the Hilltoopers would recover a miscue due to a hand of from GSC freshman quarterback Sean Steele and running back Rahmann Lee on their own one yard line as defensive end Sam Robinson would recover it in the endzone as West Liberty would take a 7-0 lead.
West Liberty would add to their lead right before halftime as Bryan Arbes would hit a 34 yard field goal as West Liberty took a 10-0 lead at the half.
West Liberty would strike again in the third quarter as Dylan Potts would catch a 13 yard touchdown pass from Dylan LaGarde at the 6:50 mark as they built a 16-0 lead after the point after attempt failed.
The Pioneers would head into the fourth quarter down 16-0 but would continue to fight. The Pioneers would finally find the endzone with only 4:51 left to play in the game as Rahmann Lee would hall in a spectacular catch from Steffen Colon from 25 yards out as they made it 16-6, as they failed to get the two point conversion.
The Pioneers would then recover an onside kick and again find the endzone as Rahmann Lee would score again on a 10 yard run with 3:21 left to play as the Pioneers trailed 13-16.
After a defensive stand by the Pioneers, West Liberty was forced to punt. The Pioneer would then start a drive. After one first down and on a first and ten Steffen Colon would be picked off by Jovontae Johnson as the Hilltoppers would hold on for the victory, 16-13 over the Pioneers.
The Pioneers outgained the Hilltoppers on the ground as GSC rushed for 137 yards while West Liberty rushed for 108 yards.
The Pioneers also had more total offense than the Hilltoppers as they tailed 376 yards to West Liberty’s 252 yards.
However the Pioneers committed 10 penalties for 75 yards while West Liberty only committed 5 for 45 yards.
GSC also committed four turnovers in the game.
Rahmann Lee rushed for 99 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown; he also caught five balls for 77 yards and a touchdown.
Steffen Colon went 16 for 34 for 184 yards and a touchdown but threw 3 interceptions. Freshman quarterback Sean Steele went 6 for 7 for 55 yards.
Dante Absher caught five passes for 49 yards, while Seth Jordan caught three passes for 38 yards.
On the defensive side James Johnson led GSC with 10 total tackles, while Gary Henderson had 5.5 tackles and a sack.
The Pioneers fall to 0-2, 0-1 on the season, they return to action this Thursday, September 19th in the home opener against rival Fairmont State in the Battle for the Bit. Kickoff is set for 7:00pm.
