Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneers defeated arch rival and Mountain East Conference (MEC) foe Fairmont State in the Annual Battle for the Bit, 31-14 in front of a packed crowd at I.L. & Sue Morris Stadium.
The Pioneers got on the scoreboard first at the 13:14 minute mark of the first quarter as DeShaun Sands scored on a 25 yard run. GSC went up 6-0, after the point after attempt failed.
However this would not stop Fairmont State as they came right back and took the lead at the 10:02 mark 7-6 over GSC.
The Pioneers would regain the lead in the second quarter at the 13:55 minute mark as Seth Jordan caught a 24 yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Sean Steele, putting the G-men up 13-7.
After the Pioneers forced a three and out,the Pioneers running back, Rahmann Lee would fumble the ball as Fairmont State’s Garrett Davis would recover it and take it 85 yards for the touchdown as FSU took a 14-13 lead into halftime.
In the third and fourth quarter it would be all Pioneers from there on out as they outscored Fairmont State 17-0, and the Pioneers would go on to win the Battle of the Bit, 31-14.
The Pioneers offense gained 25 first downs to Fairmont State’s 9. GSC also rushed for 302 total yards while the GSC defense only allowed the Falcons 94 total rushing yards.
The Pioneers offense also gained over 500 yards of total offense while FSU only tallied 131 total yards.
The Pioneers still however committed to many penalties, committing 11 for 82 yards.
GSC running back Rahmann Lee was the teams leading rusher with 164 yards on 28 carries and two touchdowns.
Freshman quarterback Sean Steele went 14 for 29 on the night for 209 yards and a touchdown.
Steele’s favorite target was Delvon Purvis. Purivs caught 5 passes for 72 yards, while Lee also caught 3 passes for 74 yards.
Gary Henderson was the teams leading tackler for the Pioneers as he had 6 total tackles, Kyle Warner had 5.5 tackles on the night, while Milton Gilchrist and Darren Elliott both had interceptions.
For Fairmont State Dawrence Roberts was the team’s leading rusher as he rushed for 59 total yards on 16 carries.
With the win the Pioneers are now 1-2 (1-1) on the year they return to action next Saturday, September 28th when they travel to take on MEC foe Urbana, kickoff is set for 12:00pm.
