Glenville, W.Va. – On a gloomy and rainy day at I.L. & Sue Morris Stadium the Glenville State Pioneer football team posted a huge victory over Mountain East newcomer UVa-Wise 49-7.
The Pioneers would get on the board first as UVa-Wise first possession would stall, they would have to attempt a field goal however senior cornerback Darren Elliott would get in the back field and block the field goal attempt and take it 66 yards as GSC went up , 7-0.
The Pioneers would again find pay dirt as Sean Steele would find Delvon Purvis for a 33 yard touchdown pass as they went up 14-0, with 12:43 left to play in second quarter.
Later in the second quarter GSC running back Rahmann Lee would score on a 15 yard run as the Pioneers would go up 21-0.
However UVa-Wise would manage to put a drive together right before halftime as they would drive 72 yards as Jeremy Eubank would hit James Long on a five yard touchdown pass as the Pioneers would take 21-7 lead into halftime.
The Pioneers would continue their dominate play in the second half.
Lee would add another touchdown run in the third quarter this one coming from 52 yards out as the Pioneers would go up, 28-7.
Sean Steele would then find DeShaun Sands on a 21 yard touchdown pass putting GSC up, 35-7.
Then later in the third quarter Steffen Colon would hit tight end Jake Harper on a 21 yard touchdown pass and running back Manny Smith would score on a 12 yard run, his first touchdown as a Pioneer, as the Pioneers would go on to win by a final score of 49-7.
The Pioneers rushed for 271 yards while the GSC defense only allowed eight rushing yards for UVa-Wise.
GSC also racked up 489 yard of total offense.
The Pioneers also won the time of possession battle as they held the ball for 30:44 while UVa-Wise held it for 29:16.
The Pioneers defense played a great game as they pitched a shut out in the second half. The defense also caused two interceptions in the game.
Terry Reese and Demetrius Quarles both racked up six tackles each in the game. Darren Elliott had five tackles in the game along with an interception and a touchdown while Keith Mayes had four tackles and an interception.
Rahmann Lee led the Pioneers rushing attack as he rushed for 174 yards on 17 carries and had two touchdowns.
Freshman quarterback Sean Steele went 10 for 15 for 132 yards and threw two touchdowns, while Steffen Colon went five for five for 86 yards and a touchdown.
Tight end Jake Harper was the teams leading receiver with three catches for 61 yards and a touchdown. Tyler Gardiner also caught three passes for 44 yards.
UVa-Wise’s quarterback Jeremy Eubank went 23 for 41 for 250 yards with two interceptions and a touchdown. Receiver James Long had a big game as he caught 11 passes for 144 yards and a touchdown.
The Pioneers are now 3-4(3-3) on the season, they return to action next Saturday, October 26th when they travel to Notre Dame College. Kickoff is set for 1:00pm.
