Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneers football team suffered a tough home loss to the Shepherd University Rams on a rainy day in at I.L. & Sue Morris Stadium by a final score of 19-45.
The Pioneers would get on the board first as Ben Watts blocked a punt by Shepherd and returned it 40 yards to pay dirt as GSC took a 7-0 lead.
Shepherd would later get on the board after a 23 yard field goal by Ryan Earls as they made it 7-3.
The Rams would close out the second quarter as they would score 14 more points as Shepherd would take a 17-7 lead into halftime.
The Rams would continue their good play as they would they would score two more touchdowns early in the third quarter to take a 31-7 lead over GSC.
However GSC would continue to battle as freshman quarterback Sean Steele would help the Pioneers drive 91 yards on nine plays as he hit Dante Absher on an eight yard touchdown pass as they made it 13-31, but the point after failed.
But on following kickoff Shepherd’s CJ Davis would return it 90 yards for a touchdown as the Rams would take a 38-13 lead.
GSC would add another score late in the fourth quarter as Steffen Colon hit Seth Jordan on a five yard touchdown pass as they made it 19-38.
The Rams would add another later score as they would go on to defeat the Pioneers 45-19, as Shepherd handed the Pioneers their first home loss to of the 2013 season.
Shepherd racked up 390 total yards of offense while the Pioneers totaled 237 yards in the game.
GSC also committed three turnovers in the game.
Both teams racked up the penalty yards as Shepherd had 16 penalties for 186 yards while the Pioneers had 12 penalties for 119 yards.
GSC running back Rahmann Lee rushed for 148 yards on 22 carries. Lee is the first 100 yard rusher this season allowed by the Rams defense this season.
Freshman quarterback Sean Steele went 10 for 23 for 95 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
Delvon Purvis was his favorite target as he caught five passes for 57 yards while Michael Evans caught two passes for 22 yards.
Elijah Sala led the Pioneers defense as he racked up 7.5 tackles; James Johnson also finished with 6.5 tackles while Gray Henderson also had 6.5 tackles and had a sack as well.
The Rams we led by Allen Cross on the ground as he rushed for 99 yards on 22 carries. Quarterback Jeff Ziemba for 15 for 24 for 180 yards and a touchdown.
The Pioneers return to action next week November 9th at home when Walsh travels to Glenville, kickoff is set for 1:00pm.
