Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Lady Pioneers basketball team picked up their first victory of the 2013-14 season in their home and season opener against Virginia Union 117-88, in front of a packed Jesse R. Lilly Gymnasium.
GSC and Virginia Union would battle back and fourth in the early minutes of the first half.
At the 11:10 minute mark of the first the Lady Pioneers would turn it on and go on an 11 point run as they took a 31-20 lead. After that run it would be all GSC from their on out as they cruised to a 29 point victory over Virginia Union, 117-88.
It also marks the first win for first year head coach Charles Marshall.
The Lady Pioneers defense caused 30 turnovers and converted them into 41 points. GSC also shot 43 percent from the floor and 42 percent from behind the three point line as they drilled 17 of them in the game.
GSC had six players score in double figures. Senior guard Tiffani Huffman was the games leading scorer with 25 points, six assists, and five rebounds.
Kenyona Simmons scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds while Tasia Bristow scored 14 points and dished out seven assists.
Kenyell Goodson and Keyanna Tate both chipped in with 13 points, Tate also grabbed 11 rebounds as she pulled down a double double on the evening. Briauna Nix finished with 11 points.
Virginia Union was led by ShaHadah Barret as she scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds.
The Lady Pioneers return to action Saturday night at 7:30p.m. at Jesse R. Lilly Gymnasium when they take on Kutztown. Kutztown is coming off a 80-74 loss to West Liberty.
