Glenville, WV- Glenville State College students are again helping the less fortunate during the holiday season. Students in Glenville State College’s PED 326 (Physical Education of Early/Middle Child) class have collected new and almost new tennis shoes for local children. The project took place throughout the month of November.
The initiative began a few years ago after GSC students who were doing their student teaching observation noticed that not all kindergarteners through sixth grade students had shoes for physical education classes. Since the ‘Sole Support for Physical Education’ project began, the efforts have resulted in nearly 95 pairs of shoes and socks collected for children in need.
“As a P.E. major, it made me feel good to be able to help children out. I didn’t realize that there are a lot of children in Gilmer County with no tennis shoes or shoes that are too small for them. After observing the gym classes, it just made me want to help these students out by getting them shoes so they could enjoy gym class and not have to sit out because they don’t have any shoes or have their feet hurt the whole time from their shoes being too small,” said GSC physical education major and local resident Monica Bush of Glenville (Gilmer County), West Virginia.
“It is encouraging to see our future teachers show much concern about the overall well-being of young children they will one day teach. Being a student led project, the students elected to complete this project once again for the fall 2013 semester,” said GSC Associate Professor of Physical Education and Athletic Director Janet Bailey.
