Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State men’s basketball team held on for a huge Mountain East Conference victory as they defeated the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals, 71-70.
In the first half of play both teams would go back and fourth as Wheeling Jesuit would take a seven point lead over GSC at the 17:55 mark, 0-7.
However the Pioneers would erase that deficit and take a nine point lead their selves at the 6:44 mark of the first half, 29-20.
GSC would later go into halftime up by five points, 36-31.
In the second half GSC would build an 11point lead over WJU 50-39 with about 12:00 minutes left in the game. But Wheeling Jesuit wouldn’t give up as they would comeback and retake the lead with 1:49 left in the game, 68-66.
But the Pioneers would fined away to win as Lamar Mallory would get a three-point play to take a 69-68 lead. Then on Wheeling Jesuit’s next possession GSC’s Donte Morales would come up big with a steal and find Reggie Williams as he hit a layup putting GSC up by three points, 71-68.
However Wheeling Jesuit would come down and after a GSC foul, hit two free throws to make it, 71-70. But that would be it as GSC would hold on to a one point victory over the Cardinals, 71-70.
The Pioneers would have a huge advantage in points off turnovers as they scored 30 points off of turnovers while Wheeling Jesuit scored only 15 points.
GSC shot 43 percent from the floor while Wheeling Jesuit shot 41 percent from the floor.
Kevin Gray scored 20 points to led the Pioneers as he connected on six three points. Lamar Mallory scored 19 points for GSC. Jordan McCloud was the only other Pioneer to score in double figures as he chipped in with 10 points.
Reggie Williams pulled down a team high 8 rebounds and handed out 4 assists.
Wheeling Jesuit was led by Eric Siefert as he scored a game high 28 points.
The Pioneers return to the court this Monday, January 13th as they travel to take on the #1 team in Division II West Liberty. Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm.
