Glenville, W.Va. – On a night when seniors Ginny Mills and Kenyell Goodson were honored as they both joined the GSC 1,000 point club the #10 Lady Pioneers basketball team escaped a close call at home on Thursday evening as they defeated the Urbana University Blue Knights, 63-58.
In the first half of play GSC’s largest lead would be by seven points, 18-11, at the 10:54 mark. However Urbana would cut into the Lady Pioneers lead as GSC only took a one point lead into halftime, 25-24.
Urbana would control most of the second half of play as they slowed down the pace of the game. The Blue Knights would build a seven point lead, 47-54, with only 4:33 left to play. But GSC would not give up and would take a two point lead, 58-56, with 2:14 to play.
But once again Urbana would tie it up at 58 all with 1:37 left, after that the Lady Pioneers would pull away as they would go on to win by five points, 63-58, despite Urbana trying to slow down the pace.
GSC won the battle in the paint as they outscored Urbana 25 to 18 in the paint. The Lady Pioneers also won the rebounding battle by one as they out-rebounded Urbana 40 to 39.
Kenyona Simmons led GSC as she scored a game high 14 points. Tasia Bristow scored 13 points on the night.
Jessica Parsons dished a game high 5 assists while Aesha Peters grabbed a game high 10 rebounds.
Urbana was led by Kennedy Boggs with 11 points. Boggs was the only Blue Knight to score in double figures.
The Lady Pioneers improve to 22-2 (17-1) with the win. They return to action Saturday, February 15th when they hit the road as they travel to Notre Dame College. Game time is set for 2:00 pm.
