Charleston, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneers defeated the Shepherd University Rams 74-72 as they advance into the MEC semifinals.
In the first half of play both teams would go back and fourth, as they traded several baskets early. However GSC’s Lamar Mallory would have to head to the bench as he picked up two quick fouls as the Rams would tie it up at 9 all at the 14:54 minute mark.
GSC would take a one point lead, 19-18, as Lamont Cole drilled a deep three-pointer with under 11:00 minutes till halftime.
The Pioneers would then make a little run as they would build a seven point lead, 36-29, with 3:00 minutes left in the first half.
However the Rams would have a run of the own but the Pioneers would head into halftime up one, 39-38.
The Pioneers biggest lead in the first half was seven points, while Shepherd largest lead was five points.
In the second half of play Shepherd would come out and go on a 3-0 run as they took a 41-39 lead over GSC. But GSC would come right back and tie it up a 41 all at the 17:57 minute mark.
The Pioneers would continue to battle and take a five point lead, 55-50, with 9:00 minutes left in the game. GSC would then extend their lead to seven points, 57-50, after two made free-throws by Lamar Mallory.
The Rams would then catch fire from behind the three-point line and re-take the lead at the 5:36 minute mark by two points, 61-59. Shepherd would then extend their lead to five points, 70-65, with 1:45 left in the game.
But the Pioneers would then cut the Rams lead to two points after a three-point play by Reggie Williams, 70-68. Then on the next GSC possession, after a Rams foul, Williams would then hit two free-throws to tie it up at 70 all.
After two made free-throws by Shepherd, putting them up 72-70, GSC would call a timeout as Coach Stephen Dye would draw up a play. GSC’s Kevin Gray would then drill a deep three-pointer putting the Pioneers up 73-72 with 10 seconds left to play.
But Shepherd would have another possession. But the Pioneers defense would come up big and force a turnover as the Pioneers would hold on to the 74-72 victory over the Shepherd Rams.
The Pioneers had three players score in double figures with Donte Morales leading the way with 18 points and 5 rebounds. Lamar Mallory scored 15 points and grabbed 7 rebounds while Kevin Gray, who hit the huge three-pointer, finished with 12 points and 3 steals.
Shepherd was led by Brantley Osborne as he scored a game high 24 points. Austin Cunningham chipped in with 16 points for the Rams.
With the win the Pioneers advance to the semifinals of the MEC Conference Tournament presented by Go-Mart. They will play the University of Charleston on Saturday, March 8th, tip-off is set for 6:00 pm.
