Glenville, W.Va. – West Liberty pushed Glenville State to the limit, but the Lady Pioneers out-scored the Hilltoppers 21-8 in the game’s final eight minutes to claim an 82-70 win in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Trailing 45-38 at the half, West Liberty scored the first eight points to start the second and take the lead and get back in the game. The game remained close with GSC’s lead trimmed to one at 66-65 after a three-pointer from Emily Bucon with 6:21 on the clock, but the Pioneers answered with an 11-2 run over the next three minutes that provided GSC with the cushion it needed down the stretch.
Tasia Bristow led Glenville State with 21 points and four assists. Kenyona Simmons also added 21 points and added nine rebounds. Briauna Nix contributed 12 points and eight boards.
West Liberty’s Liz Flowers led all scorers with 26 points and eight rebounds. Kailee Howe had 15 points and six rebounds, and Kierra Simpson had nine points to go with nine boards.
Glenville State took advantage of 29-of-33 shooting from the free throw line, while West Liberty made 10-of-16. Both teams struggled from behind the arc as GSC sank just 3-of-22 and West Liberty hit 6-of-31.
The Lady Pioneers will take on Bloomsburg University in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, March 15th. Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm.
Bloomsburg is coming off a 75-57 win over Virginia State.
