Pioneers Drop Double Header to West Liberty

Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneer Baseball team took on West Liberty on Saturday, March 22nd in a double header at the Sue Morris Sports Complex.

In the first game Brock McClung would get the start on the mound for GSC and would get off to a great start as he had a no hitter heading into the top of the third inning. However West Liberty would get their bats swinging as they took a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning.

Then the Pioneers would cut West Liberty’s lead to one, 2-1, after Tucker Abruzzino hit a single as John Orsborn crossed the plate in the bottom of the fourth.

But in the top of the sixth inning West Liberty would add five runs as they took a 7-1 lead over the Pioneers.

GSC would add another run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Ethan Szabo hit a sacrifice fly scoring Khalfani Marna making it 7-2, West Liberty.

And that’s as close as GSC would get as West Liberty would take game one of the double header, 7-2.

GSC finished the game with five hits while West Liberty finished with six hits. The Pioneers also committed three errors in the ball game.

Tucker Abruzzino went 2 for 3 with an RBI while Ethan Szabo went 1 for 2 with a RBI.

Brock McClung pitched three innings allowing 3 hits, 2 runs, and walked 4 batters.

In the second game of the double header West Liberty would strike first as they took a 1-0 lead over GSC in the top of the first inning.

However West Liberty would then extend their lead in the top of the second inning as they added three more runs as they took a 4-0 lead over the Pioneers.

West Liberty would continue their good play as they added another run in the top of the third inning, taking a 5-0 lead.

The Pioneers would get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third after John Orsborn hit a single scoring John Royce, as GSC cut West Liberty’s lead to four, 5-1.

GSC would then add two more runs as they pulled within two, 3-5, heading into the top of the sixth inning.

However West Liberty would finish the game strong and claim a 8-4 win over the Pioneers.

Jonathan Orsborn went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI’s while Randy Baugher went 2 for 3 with an RBI and scored a run.

Justin Oney pitched 5 innings allowing 7 hits, 6 runs, and struck out 2 batters.

The Pioneers return to action Sunday, March 23rd when they take on West Liberty again as they finish their four game series. Game time is 1:00 pm.
