Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneer baseball team split a double header with the Fairmont State University Fighting Falcons on Wednesday afternoon.
In the first game of the double header the Pioneers would strike first in the bottom of the first inning as Tucker Abruzzino hit a two RBI single scoring Justin Lewis and Heath Swisher as Glenville State took a 2-0 lead.
The Pioneers would add to their lead in the bottom of the second inning as Heath Swisher hit an RBI single scoring Randy Bougher and later Ethan Szabo hit an RBI double scoring Justin Lewis. Then Abruzzino hit another two RBI double as Heath Swisher and Ethan Szabo both scored, and after an error Zach Sanford also crossed the plate as Glenville State took a 7-0 lead over the Fighting Falcons.
The Pioneers would add another run in the bottom of the third inning as GSC would go up 8-0 over Fairmont State.
Fairmont State would score two runs in the top of the fifth inning as the Fighting Falcons cut the Pioneers lead to six, 8-2.
The Pioneers would score three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as they took an 11-2 lead over Fairmont State. The Pioneers would hold that large lead as they would defeat Fairmont State in the first game, 11-2.
The Pioneers would finish the game with 11 hits while Fairmont State only had 6 hits in the game.
Tucker Abruzzino went 2 for 4 with 4 RBI’s while Ethan Szabo went 2 for 4 with 3 RBI‘s and scored a run.
Justin Oney pitched all seven innings allowing only 2 runs, walked a batter, and struck out 2 batters.
In the second game, Glenville State would take a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first after Ethan Szabo hit a three run RBI double scoring Justin Lewis, Heath Swisher, and Khalfani Mar’Na. Later Alex Mace hit an RBI single scoring Ethan Szabo.
Fairmont State would tie it up at 4-4 after a big second inning. The Fighting Falcons would take their first lead in the top of the third inning as they scored one run as they went up 5-4 over the Pioneers.
GSC would tie it up at 5-5 in the bottom of the third inning after Zach Sanford scored off of an RBI by Alex Mace.
However Fairmont State would retake the lead in the top of the fourth as they scored two more runs to take a 7-5 lead over the Pioneers.
In the bottom of the fourth Randy Bougher would hit a solo homerun as GSC pulled within one, 7-6.
The Pioneers would then tie it up, 7-7, in the bottom of the seventh inning after Heath Swisher scored on a Fairmont State error as we headed to extra innings.
Fairmont State would take an 8-7 lead in the top of the eleventh inning and would go on the defeat the Pioneers in the second game.
Ethan Szabo went 1 for 4 with 3 RBI’s and scored a run while Alex Mace went 1 for 5 with 2 RBI’s.
Chris Knapp pitched seven innings allowing 7 runs, walked 6 batters, and had one strike out.
The Pioneers return to action Friday, April 19th when UVA-Wise travels to Glenville. Game time is set for 1:00pm.
