Pioneers Pick Up Their Six Straight Win

The Pioneers ran their win streak to six straight as they downed Davis and Elkins, 88-71, on the final regular season game for six Glenville State seniors. Anthony Kimble scored 27 points and grabbed six boards, while Tyrvan Leech added 22 points and seven rebounds for the Pioneers as they improve to 18-8 overall and 12-7 in the WVIAC.  The victory also provided a season sweep for the Pioneers over Davis & Elkins.
Chase Groves added 11 markers in the contest while Jamal Holden and Jacob Miller each added 10 points off the bench as the Pioneers now sit in fifth place in the 16-team WVIAC standings.  Further, with the victory, the Pioneers have guaranteed themselves a home game in the first round of the WVIAC tournament.
D&E’s Tim Turner had a game high 32 points as the visiting Senators fell to 7-19 overall and 5-14 in the WVIAC.
After battling back and forth for the majority of the opening 10 minutes, Davis & Elkins would take a four-point, 17-13 lead midway through the first half.  The Pioneers would then respond with a 17-6 run over the next five and a half minutes to a 30-23 lead with just more than four minutes to play in the opening half.  The visiting Senators would respond with a 10-2 run to take a 33-32 lead with two minutes remaining before intermission.  The Pioneers would finish the final two minutes on a 7-1 spurt to take a 39-33 lead at the break.
After Davis & Elkins’ Danny Manuel would open the second half with a three to cut the Pioneer lead to 39-36, Glenville State would go on a 20-4 spurt over the next 7 minutes to push the lead to 19 at 59-40 with 12:23 left in the contest.  The lead would swell to as many as 21 points in a slow second half that saw 27 fouls combined by the two teams.  The two teams would combine to shoot 47 foul shots in the second half alone.
The Pioneers shot 49.1% from the field, 36% from behind the arc and 78.1% from the charity stripe. They also outrebounded the visitors 35-33 and held the Senators to only 42% shooting in the contest.
Glenville State will travel to Buckhannon to take on WV Wesleyan on Saturday. The game will be the final regular season contest for both teams.  Tip Off is scheduled for 4:00pm.
