Lady Pioneers Open Season in Carson Newman Invitational

The 2009 version of the Glenville State College Lady Pioneer volleyball team opened their season this past weekend in Jefferson City, TN at the Carson Newman Invitational.

On Friday, the team opened up with two top level teams from the South Atlantic Conference, both of whom were in the 2008 NCAA tournament field. Carson Newman defeated the lady Pioneers in three sets, and the adjustments of the new team were apparent. The next match for the Lady Pioneers was against Lincoln Memorial University. The Lady Pioneers won set one, then dropped three straight in losing the match 3-1.

Saturday, the team faced an extremely athletic Texas A&M Kingsville team who had defeated two WVIAC schools on Friday. GSC played the Javelinas tougher than any team they had faced in the tournament, but Kingsville defeated the team 3-0 despite a very strong blocking performance by the Lady Pioneers.  The team’s final match of the tournament was against Lees McRae from Conference Carolinas. The Lady Bobcats are expected to be back atop their conference this season.  GSC played another tough match, but dropped another heartbreaker to Lees McRae 3-0.

Team leaders for the weekend:

  • Erica Hale – 86 assists, 14 kills, 28 digs, 3 aces – All Tournament Team
  • Ashley Dann – 25 kills, 13 total blocks
  • Lauren Saelens – 24 kills, 9 assists, 4 aces, 40 digs, 10 total blocks
