GSC Places Two on WVIAC Softball First Team

West Virginia Wesleyan outfielder Kashilia Young, Bobcat pitcher Hillary Perez-Ashley, Alderson-Broaddus rookie Adrienne Daniels and WV Wesleyan head coach Steve Warner have been tabbed by league coaches for the top 2011 WVIAC individual softball awards.

Young becomes the ninth WV Wesleyan player to win Player of the Year honors and the 12th time the school has had the WVIAC Player of the Year. Perez-Ashley becomes the seventh WVWC student-athlete to take home the Pitcher of the Year award and the 15th time Bobcats’ players have garnered the accolade. Daniels is the second Alderson-Broaddus player to earn Freshman of the Year as Talia Tabor did so during the first year of the award. Warner picked up his 13th Coach of the Year honor after guiding the Bobcats to the 2011 regular season and conference title.

Young recorded a stellar .359 average on the season and blasted 19 home runs while accounting for 64 RBI. She led the league in slugging percentage (.772), runs scored (47), RBI (64), home runs (19) and total bases (129). The Arkansas City, Kan., native guided her team to a 21-1 regular-season league record and lifted the squad to the tournament title by blasting her 19th round tripper of the season. The home run provided all three runs for WVWC in the 3-2 win.

Perez-Ashley posted a 23-1 mark while sporting an ERA of 2.39. She worked 150.2 innings, sporting four shutouts and one combined shutout on the season. Perez-Ashley fanned 170 batters and held hitters to a .203 average. She appeared in 26 games, starting 24. Perez-Ashley went the distance in 22 contests for the NCAA Tournament-bound Bobcats.

Daniels, a native of Clarksburg, W. Va., belted out a .369 average during the regular season. She helped guide A-B to a ninth-place finish in the regular season and helped the team knock off the No. 8 seed in the first round of the WVIAC Tournament. During the regular season, she scored 28 times, had eight doubles, 11 RBI and swiped nine bases.

Warner picked up his second consecutive Coach of the Year honor and his 13th during his illustrious career at WV Wesleyan. He led the team to the regular season and tournament championship and owns a 46-6 record on the season. For his career, Warner is 734-268-1 in 19 seasons at the helm. The Buckhannon native helped the team to its 17th regular-season title since 1992 and 15th tournament title over the same span.
