Leanne Harris Earns All-WVIAC First Team Honors

.)—West Virginia State shortstop Brittany Hyatt, West Virginia Wesleyan pitcher Patricia Moreno, and Fairmont State pitcher Chelsea Cobb have been tabbed by league coaches for the top 2010 WVIAC individual softball awards.
Hyatt becomes the first West Virginia State player to win Player of the Year honors, while Moreno repeats as the conference’s Pitcher of the Year.  Cobb is the Freshman of the Year after a record-breaking season for Fairmont State.  West Virginia Wesleyan’s Steve Warner was recognized by his peers as the WVIAC Coach of the Year for the 12th time after leading the ‘Cats to the league regular season and tournament championships.
Hyatt torched league pitchers to the tune of a WVIAC-best .445 batting average during her sophomore season.  The 2009 WVIAC Freshman of the Year also topped the league with 62 runs scored, 15 more than any other conference player.  The Hagerstown, MD native added power for the 34-23 Jackets with nine doubles, five home runs, and four triples.  She was also hit by pitch 11 times and swiped 10 bases to spark the WVSU attack.
Moreno won a razor-thin vote against Shepherd’s Tricia Bettura and Charleston’s Stefanie Rossman for her second straight WVIAC Pitcher of the Year award.  The Phoenix, Arizona senior went 23-6 with a 1.54 earned run average to rank in the league’s top three in both categories.  She saved her best effort of the season for the WVIAC Tournament with a 20-inning scoreless streak to earn MVP honors.  On the season, Moreno fanned 187 hitters in 186.0 innings for the NCAA Tournament-bound Bobcats.
Cobb helped Fairmont State remain in contention for the WVIAC regular season crown until the final weekend by earning a school-record 24 victories against 11 defeats.  The Dunbar, WV rookie posted a 2.48 earned run average and stands second in the WVIAC with an FSU season-season best 212 strikeouts.
Warner edged Shepherd’s Leslie Lopez and Concord’s Sabrina McCullough by one vote each to add his 12th WVIAC Coach of the Year award.  The Buckhannon native owns a 687-260-1 career record in 18 seasons as the Wesleyan head coach after this season’s sparkling 43-11 mark.  The Bobcats’ regular season title marks the school’s 16th since 1992.  WVWC’s march to the WVIAC Tournament title is their 14th over the same span.
Hyatt, Moreno, Leanne Harris (Glenville State), and Mereaha Cooper (Alderson-Broaddus) are repeat selections from the 2009 All-WVIAC first team.  Charleston’s Rossman, the national leader in strikeouts, was a 2008 all-conference first team pick.  Wheeling Jesuit’s Ashley McSweeney, who missed much of last year due to injury, is back on the first team All-WVIAC squad after being selected in 2007 and 2008.
The remainder of the 15-player first team All-WVIAC softball team includes Bettura and Cobb, along with West Virginia Wesleyan teammates Kaitlyn Carey, Shelby Carlson, and Kashilia Young.  Samantha Clement (Concord), Nichole Pitcock (Shepherd), Kayla Sturms (WV State), and Brittany Tallhamer (Fairmont State) round out the squad.
