Homestanding GSC took a 14-7 lead with 37 seconds left in the third quarter when Darold Hughes connected with Wes Hanson on a nine-yard touchdown pass. However, two Cory Smith touchdown passes and a blocked punt return by Rakim Williams helped UNCP escape with the victory.
Smith led the Braves by completing 16 of 29 passes for 164 yards and three touchdowns. Hughes hit on 24 of 42 throws for 216 yards for Glenville State.
Both teams struggled on the ground with UNCP owning a slight 74-64 edge. Glenville State held a 280-238 advantage in total offense on the afternoon.
Pioneer kicker Colston Bayless booted field goals of 22 and 31 yards to account for the only first half scoring as Glenville State took a 6-0 lead into the locker room at the break.
