Funded through the Pete and Betsy Barr Professional Development Endowment Fund, the award is presented annually, with faculty and staff recipients alternating each year.

The 2010 award was presented to a faculty member, while the 2011 award will go to a staff member.

The award was established by GSC President Peter Barr and his wife, Betsy.

The funds must be used within eighteen months of being awarded.
