The hot Lady Pioneers were cooled off as they drop a pair to the first place Bobcats of WV Wesleyan by a score of 5-4 and 6-0. GSC drops to 9-14 on the season and 5-3 in WVIAC play.
Glenville State would spot WVWC 4 runs in the opener and were unable to come back.
After a shaky start, GSC would get things going trailing 4-0 in the bottom half of the 2nd. Morgan Elswick would lead off with a single and then advance into scoring position on a passed ball. After a Kohle Maynard line out, Lacey Williams would smack a 1-0 fastball just past the third baseman to score Elswick with a double. Williams would move to 3rd on a ground out by Brooke Foster and after a walk and a hit by pitch the bases would be load. The hot hitting Leanne Harris (.375 AVG coming into tonight’s games) would single to left to plate Williams. Karly Eskew would follow with a single to left of her own scoring Erin Morgan. Brittney Handley would be thrown out at the plate on a close play to end the rally.
The Lady Bobcats would add a much needed insurance run in the 4th as Trisha Thurston would single and eventually score on a passed ball.
Glenville State would not go away quietly as back to back doubles by Harris and Eskew in the top of the 5th would draw the Pioneers to within one at 5-4. Eskew would be thrown out at the plate attempting to score on a sharp grounder to the shortstop.
GSC would threaten again in the 7th after WV Wesleyan would quickly retire Eskew and Candace White. Elswick would keep the inning alive reaching on an error by the shortstop. Maynard would follow with a single and Williams would load the bases on a two out walk. Foster would follow drilling the 2-2 offering to right, however she hit it right at the RF Carlson who snagged the line drive to end the game.
Harris and Eskew would lead the way collecting three and two hits respectively.
Laura Childers came on in relief of Elswick in the 3rd inning to see her first action since tearing her ACL against WVWC last year. Childers went five innings, giving up one unearned run and scattering four hits.
WV Wesleyan would again jump out to an early lead scoring single runs in both the 1st and 2nd innings. Those runs would be all that starting pitcher Patricia Moreno would need as she would go the distance for the shutout. Moreno would scatter three hits, while striking out 12 and walking just two.
WVWC would add two insurance runs in the 6th and 7th innings for the 6-0 final.
Starting pitcher Mandy Parkulo would go seven innings, giving up 6 runs, 4 earned on 12 hits while walking five and striking out one.
Eskew, Harris and Morgan would record the only hits for the Lady Pioneers as they were plagued by four errors.
GSC returns to action this weekend as they host a double header on Saturday versus Concord and on Sunday versus West Liberty State. Both contests will start at 1pm at GSC field.
