Glenville spotted the Lady Cardinals a three run lead and were unable to rally back as they fell 3-2 in the opener.
WJU got on the board in the top of the 3rd as Courtney Kurowski would lead off with a single and move to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt and 3rd on a ground out. She would score two pitches latter on a passed ball by Candace White, to make it 1-0.
After a 1, 2, 3 4th inning for GSC, Wheeling would go to work again. After an Ashley Morris single, Brandy Jester would reach base on a fielder’s choice. Vanessa Ilovar would single and Angela Petros would reach on an error to load the bases with one out.
Jamie Donato would then fly out to the center fielder Lacey Williams, as Jester would tag up and score on the play to make it 2-0. Four pitches later Ilovar, who moved to third on the sacrifice fly, would score on a passed ball.
The Lady Pioneers would get two runs back in their half of the 6th as Morgan Elswick would follow a White base on balls with a two run homer.
However that would be all the scoring as GSC would leave runners on 1st and 2nd in the top of the 7th.
Elswick would go six innings, giving up three runs, one earned on three hits while striking out two and walking none.
Brittney Handley and Kohle Maynard each reached base twice with a walk and a base hit
This time WJU would spot Glenville runs as the Pioneers would explode for three runs in the first. Handley and Leanne Harris would lead off with singles and advance to 2nd and 3rd on stolen bases. Karly Eskew would follow with a single to left scoring Handley. Three pitches later White would drill a double to the fence scoring both Harris and Eskew to make it 3-0 after a ½ inning.
The Lady Birds would knot things up at 3 in the bottom half of the 3rd. Olivia Wamsley and Ashley Morris would single around two WJU outs. Jester would single scoring Wamsley and moving Morris to third.
After Jester stole 2nd, Ilovar would be intentionally walked to load the bases. Petros would follow with a 2out single to score both Jester and Morris to tie the game at 3-3.
Wheeling would grab the lead one inning later as Kurowski would lead off with a first pitch homer, to make it 4-3.
Glenville would get a big two out hit of their own in the top of the 6th as Harris would drive in Brooke Foster with a single to right center.
The game would stay 4-4 till the 12th inning.
Eskew would start the inning at second base due to the international tiebreaker. After a White pop out Elswick would single home the speedy Eskew to put the Lady Pioneers up for good 5-4.
Mandy Parkulo would pitch a 1, 2, 3 12th inning to preserve the win. She would pitch all 12 innings, giving up 4 runs, all earned on 12 hits. The junior also struck out seven and walked five en route to facing 53 batters.
Handley and Elswick each recorded three hits and Candace White drove in two.
The Pioneers return to action on Thursday as they play host to WVIAC leading WV Wesleyan at 6pm.
