The Glenville State Lady Pioneers couldn’t make their four run lead stand up as they dropped their opener in the 2008 WVIAC Softball Tournament to Salem International by the count of 7 to 4.
In the first inning, GSC would jump all over Lady Tiger’s ace Kyanna Cape (Anchorage, AK) as they scored all four of their runs. Glenville would quickly load the bases as Kristy Richards (St. Mary’s, WV) would reach on error and back to back singles from Karly Eskew (Charleston, WV) and Leanne Harris (Windsor, ONT). Kayla Shobe (Point Pleasant, WV) would follow with a bases clearing triple to put the Pioneers up 3-0. Shobe would then score on a throwing error by SIU.
Salem Int’l would get a run back in the top half of the 2nd inning on a Amber Russell (Grayson, GA) lead off, solo home run to cut the GSC lead to 4-1.
The score would remain this way till the top of the 5th inning. Thea Cooper (Huntington, WV) would lead off the inning with a single and Erin Smith (Kitchener, ONT) would follow with a single of her own. Russell would reach on a fielder’s choice, forcing out Cooper and moving Smith to 2nd base. Weslyn Leffler (Ormond Beach, FL) would reach on a infield error by the Pioneers, scoring Smith on the play and cutting their deficit to 4-2.
The Tigers would grab the lead for good as they would score five runs in the 6th inning. SIU would get three singles by Alicia Potts (Bridgeport, WV), Kassidy Nutter (Clarksburg, WV) and Cooper to load the bases with one out for Smith. Smith, who batted .414 during the regular season, would single scoring both Potts and Nutter to pull even at four all. GSC starter Mandy Parkulo (Shady Spring, WV) would then get LaKeisha Bowsman (Clarksburg, WV) to pop up for the 2nd out. Russell would follow with her second hit of the game, a double, to drive in Cooper and move Smith to 3rd. Leffler would then get RBI’s two and three with a single to score both Smith and Russell to put SIU up 7-4.
Cape would retire six of the final seven batters to secure the win for SIU.
With the win, Salem International improves to 16-36 on the season, while the GSC Lady Pioneers fall to 17-32. SIU moves on to play #1 seed and WVIAC regular season champion WV Wesleyan later this afternoon. Glenville State will take on the loser of WV State and Shepherd to be played later this evening, tomorrow at 10 A.M.
