GSC Softball Splits With West Liberty State
(West Liberty, WV) – The Lady Pioneers recovered from a late loss in game one, to grab a game two victory over the host West Liberty State College. Glenville rebounded in the second game to win 6-2, after giving up a walk off homerun in the bottom of the 7th in a 5-3 game one defeat. The Lady Pioneers are now 9-23 on the season and 3-5 in the WVIAC.
West Liberty State’s Vannessa Esenberg drilled a one out, three run walk off homerun in the bottom of the 7th inning to give the Hilltoppers’ a 5-3 victory. GSC’s Mandy Parkulo quickly got the out of the inning, before giving up a double to WLSC’s Katie Ketchum. Parkulo then intentionally walked Rachel Mason, before Katelyn Krumm would sacrifice the runners to second and third to set up Esenberg’s blast.
WLSC would get on the board first in this contest as Cindy Carmichael would lead off the inning with a single, and then eventually score on a Mason single and Pioneer fielding error.
Glenville State would erupt for three runs in the top of the fourth inning to grab a 3-1 advantage. Jade Jean would single to get things started for the Pioneers. Donita Adams would get plunked in the arm and be awarded first base. Both Adams and pinch runner Miranda Reed would advance a base on a Kat Bowman sacrifice. Karly Eskew would get GSC on the board as she drilled the first pitch she saw into left center to score Reed. After a Leanne Harris groundout to the pitcher, red hot Kayla Shobe would drill 2-1 offering into the left center gap for a 2 out, 2 run double as both Adams and Eskew would score.
West Lib would get a run back as Ketchum would reach base and advance to second with two outs on a GSC fielding error. Mason would then follow with a double to score Ketchum to make it 3-2.
The Pioneers would quickly shake off any ill effects of the late game loss in the opener as they would jump out to a quick 3-0 lead after one. GSC would quickly load the bases as Eskew, Harris and Shobe would all single. After an out, Kristy Richards would draw a walk to score Eskew. After a Parkulo fielder’s choice, Jade Jean drew a walk to plate Kayla Shobe. Donita Adams would cap off the scoring by get hit for the second time in the day and driving in Richards.
Glenville State would make it a 4-0 advantage in the 2nd inning. Eskew would again lead off with a single and quickly advance to second with a stolen base. Shobe would be intentionally walked and then both pinch runner Reed and Eskew would each advance on a double steal. Eskew would then score from third on a passed ball.
In the 4th the Pioneers would quickly load the bases after a Harris pop out. Shobe would again single, and reach second on a Candace White walk. A K. Richards single would then load them up. Parkulo would then drive in Shobe with a groundout to second base.
West Liberty would get on the board in the 4th as Katelyn Kumm would drive in Ketchum with a RBI groundout to second, to make it 5-1 after four.
The Hilltoppers would make it 5-2 as Ketchum and Mason would hit back to back doubles in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Kayla Shobe would add an insurance run in the top of the 7th with a RBI single to score Karly Eskew to give you the final, 6-2.
