The Glenville State Lady Pioneers claimed the 2011 WVIAC Tournament Championship as they defeated the University of Charleston Golden Eagles 77-73.
The Lady Pioneers were led by Beth Deren with 16 points and LaToya Hambrick chipped in with 11 points.
Also for the Lady Pioneers Tenisha Wilson, who was the WVIAC Tournament MVP scored 10 points and had 2 steals for the game.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early led in the first half only to see Glenville State surge into the led before half.
The Lady Pioneers controlled the tempo defensively in the second half for most of the game.
UC made a late run with 3:00 minutes to go, cutting the lead to single digits, but could no take the lead as GSC made two free-throws with 0:03 to go to ice the victory.
“We except to win every game on our schedule,” said Coach Harkleroad.
For the game, GSC hit on 41.8 percent of its shots while UC made 40.8 percent of its attempts. Playing an up-tempo style, GSC accounted for 46 points off the bench while the Golden Eagles netted 16 from its non-starters.
The Lady Pioneers now stand at 23-8 on the season and will to add to that total next week in the DII Regional.
GSC will now wait until tomorrow when the NCAA selections come out at 9:30 p.m. tomorrow night.
