The Lady Pioneers hosted the Lady Redmen of Rio Grande University this past Friday, April 27. Rio Grande came out on top in both contests, 3-1 and 8-2.
In the first inning, the Lady Pioneer line-up featured Leanne Harris at second, Lacey Powell at short, Lorrie Chaperon designated hitter, Kayla Shobe at third, Stacy Mack in center field, Karly Eskew in right field, Jade Jean at first, Candace White catching, Deidra Wallace in left field, and Tiffany Bush on the mound.
RGU scored right off the bat, with 2 runs on 1 hit in the top of the 1st inning. The Lady Pioneers got 2 hits in the bottom of the 1st, and 3 hits in the bottom of the 2nd, but couldn’t manage to manufacture any runs from those opportunities. Rio Grande scored again in the 3rd to make the score 3-0, a lead that they would carry into the bottom of the 7th inning.
In the bottom of the 7th, Jade Jean started off with a double. Candace White grounded out to second base, and Deidra Wallace grounded out to third to give GSC 2 outs. Leanne Harris singled to score Jean, but was stranded on first base when Lacey Powell struck out to end the game.
Tiffany Bush took the loss for the Lady Pioneers. She pitched 7.0 innings, gave up 2 hits and 3 runs, and walked 3 batters. She faced 26 batters in outing.
In the second contest of the double header, the GSC line-up changes included Lorrie Chaperon at short, Kayla Shobe at 1st, Stacy Mack catching, Jade Jean at third, Amy Carte in right field, Elizabeth Randolph designated hitter, Jessica Gilchrist in left field, Alysha Lavey in center field, and Karly Eskew on the mound.
Rio Grande again opened the game scoring, with 1 run in the 1st and 1 in the 2nd. In the top of the 6th after a GSC pitching change in the 5th inning (Mandy Parkulo for Karly Eskew), RGU extended their lead by taking advantage of 1 GSC error and 3 hits. They scored 4 more runs in the inning.
GSC’s offense finally answered back in the bottom of the 6th. With 1 out, Lorrie Chaperon doubled to give the Lady Pioneers a runner in scoring position. Kayla Shobe flew out to center field for the 2nd out of the inning. Stacy Mack then homered to bring in Chaperon and give GSC their only 2 runs of the game. Jade Jean popped up to short to end the inning.
Rio Grande added 2 more runs on 3 hits in the 7th. With 2 outs, Jessica Gilchrist doubled to give GSC a chance to add runs, but was stranded on 2nd when Alysha Lavey struck out to end the game.
Karly Eskew took the loss for GSC. She pitched 4 innings, gave up 2 runs on 3 hits, and faced 17 batters. Mandy Parkulo pitched 3 innings in relief, gave up 6 runs on 7 hits, walked 3 batters, and earned 1 strikeout. She faced 20 batters. The GSC defense committed 1 error during Eskew’s time on the mound and 5 while Parkulo was pitching.
On Saturday, April 28th, the Lady Pioneers traveled to Bluefield, WV to take on Bluefield State College. GSC took the 1st game 5-3, but fell in the 2nd 13-5.

Neither team scored until the top of the 5th. Karly Eskew started the inning off with a single, then was moved to second on Elizabeth Randolph’s (pinch hitting for Jade Jean) sacrifice bunt. Candace White grounded out to second base for the 2nd out of the inning, and Eskew moved to third. Deidra Wallace’s single scored Eskew, then Leanne Harris grounded out to third to end the inning.
After the GSC defense took care of Bluefield in three straight batters in the bottom of the 5th, the Lady Pioneers scored 3 more runs on 3 hits in the top of the 6th. With 1 out, Lorrie Chaperon singled, but was thrown out at second on the fielder’s choice when Stacy Mack hit a ground ball. Kayla Shobe’s single advanced Mack to second. Karly Eskew’s hit created an error for BSC’s defense which allowed Mack to score. Jade Jean then doubled to bring in both Shobe and Eskew. Candace White ended the inning when she grounded out to short.
Bluefield State cut into the Lady Pioneers’ 4-run lead in the 6th, when they scored 3 runs on 3 hits. GSC answered back in the top of the 7th. Deidra Wallace reached first on a BSC error, then advanced to second on Leanne Harris’ sacrifice bunt. Lacey Powell struck out for the 1st out of the inning. Lorrie Chaperon’s single scored Wallace. Stacy Mack then singled to advance Chaperon to third and give the Lady Pioneers runners on the corners. Kayla Shobe struck out to end the inning.
The Lady Pioneer defense took care of BSC in the bottom of the 7th, and the final score was 5-3. Mandy Parkulo earned the win for GSC, facing 26 batters in 7 innings of work. She gave up 3 runs on 5 hits and recorded 4 strikeouts.
In the second game, the GSC line-up changes included Beth Moore at first, and Tiffany Bush on the mound. The Lady Pioneers started off scoring, with 2 runs on 2 hits. With 1 out, Lacey Powell singled, then advanced to second on Lorrie Chaperon’s ground out to second. Stacy Mack homered to bring in Powell. With the bases clear, Kayla Shobe drew the walk, but was stranded when Karly Eskew grounded out to the third baseman.
BSC answered back in the bottom of the 1st, scoring 2 runs on 2 hits, and taking advantage of 1 GSC error. The Lady Pioneers added another run in the 3rd. With 1 out, Lorrie Chaperon walked. Stacy Mack doubled to bring in Chaperon, but was thrown out at third trying to stretch the double into a triple. Kayla Shobe and Karly Eskew both walked, but Bluefield got out of the inning when Beth Moore’s ground ball to third gave them the easy out.
Bluefield blew the game open in the bottom of the 3rd, scoring 8 runs on 8 hits. Mandy Parkulo came in midway through the 3rd to take over the pitching duties. Neither team scored in the 4th. In the bottom of the 4th, Lacey Powell moved to designated hitter, Lorrie Chaperon to short, Jessica Gilchrist to center field, Elizabeth Randolph to right field, Jade Jean to first, and Amy Carte to left field.
GSC scored again in the 5th, as Lacey Powell started off the inning with a double. Lorrie Chaperon’s single scored Powell. Then Jessica Gilchrist singled to advance Chaperon to second. Kayla Shobe ground out, but advanced both runners. Elizabeth Randolph reached on a fielder’s choice and earned the RBI as BSC elected to get Gilchrist at third allowing Chaperon to score. Jade Jean grounded out to third to end the inning.
Bluefield scored 3 runs on 3 hits in the 6th to gain an 8-run margin and end the game. Tiffany Bush took the loss for GSC, facing 15 batters in 2.0 innings of work. She gave up 8 runs on 6 hits, and the GSC defense committed 6 errors behind her. Mandy Parkulo pitched 3.2 innings in relief. She faced 20 batters, gave up 5 runs on 9 hits, and earned 3 strikeouts.
The Lady Pioneers wrapped up their regular season and WVIAC play on Sunday when they hosted the Golden Eagles of the University of Charleston. GSC dropped both contests by a score of 2-0.

The 1st inning was scoreless for both squads. UC scored scored 1 run on 2 hits to take the lead, then added 1 more run in the 4th. Although the GSC defense held strong throughout most of the game, the Pioneer offense was severely hampered by UC’s outstanding pitching.
Kayla Shobe took the loss for the Lady Pioneers. She faced 32 batters in 7 innings of work, and gave up 2 runs on 8 hits and earned 1 strikeout. UC’s pitcher only gave up 2 hits, and earned 9 strikeouts on her way to the shutout.
In the second game, the Pioneer line-up changes included Kayla Shobe at third, Karly Eskew in right field, Jessica Gilchrist in left field, and Mandy Parkulo on the mound.
The game was a scoreless defensive battle until the top of the 5th. UC scored 2 runs on 2 hits to take the lead after a single followed up by a homerun. UC’s pitcher continued to cause the Lady Pioneer’s problems as she pitched another complete game shut out. She gave up 2 hits and fanned 9 GSC batters. Mandy Parkulo took the loss for the Lady Pioneers. She faced 29 batters in 7 innings, and gave up 2 runs on 6 hits. Parkulo earned 1 strikeout in the outing.
The Lady Pioneers head into the WVIAC Tournament this weekend with a 13-13 WVIAC record. They finished in 9th place in the final standings. GSC’s overall record on 19-33.
